1.0 Introduction
According to Taha (2017), the foundation year in UK Higher Education means a one-year foundation course that acts as the bridge between a student’s existing qualifications and the undergraduate entry requirements of the UK universities. This foundation year course is mainly designed to identify and recover different academic gaps of the students, improve their English language and familiarize the students with the culture and life of the UK for the preparation to get admission in UK universities. The foundation program’s key objectives are a) to offer the intermediate level professional as well as technical skills; b) to contribute to the agenda of widening participation by giving the new route to Higher Education from under-represented social groups; and c) to offer a progression route to the honors degrees (Simm et al., 2011).
This assignment includes three key tasks. The first task of this assignment identifies the importance of foundation year for the students and explains the identified importance of foundation year. Then, the second task of this assignment explains the main challenges that are facing by the students of the foundation year. After that, the third task of this assignment discusses how study skills in higher education can help the foundation year students to overcome the challenges.

According to Dodgson and Bolam (2015), widening participation means the increasing number of students in colleges and universities who are coming from under-represented social groups. Foundation year refers to a foundation course where it is the one-year preparation course for the international students who improve their English language and other academic skills to enter into a particular UK university for their undergraduate course. A foundation course or program is necessary for the international students who have studied less than 13 years of the non-British curriculum to enter into a UK university for the undergraduate course. According to Hatt and Baxter (2016), a foundation course supports international students to align their qualifications to the education system of a country they are coming to and to be eligible for admission to the university. There is the importance of foundation year for the students who are from the wide participation backgrounds which are identified and explained as follows:

According to Datuk (2018), the foundation course offers some initiatives to improve the English language for international students. The foundation year course includes different programs related to English language courses such as EAP (English for Academic Purposes).
