Task 1

P1 Describe different types of team and the benefits of teams for an organization

There are different types of team and each type serve to achieve different motive. Here, I am going to discuss some types of the team which has been found in Royal Dutch Shell:

Special Purpose Team: Special purpose teams are those which serve to achieve a particular goal. They are generally designed for a specific event or to solve a specific problem (Zubair, 2016). They are temporary in nature.

Multi-functional Team: This team is designed to include people with different functions in order to attain a particular goal (Zubair, 2016). This team becomes more effective when the capabilities, knowledge and training of one department are not available to solve a problem or to handle a situation.

Self-Directed Team: This team is not followed by any leadership. Members of this team are self-motivated and self-directed (Zubair, 2016). They can accomplish their job as their preferred way in order to attain the firm’s goal.

Management Team: The management team includes a group of individuals that operate at the higher levels of an organization (Zubair, 2016). The management team is responsible for managing other individuals and maintaining responsibility for main business functions.

Virtual Team: Virtual team allows members to connect with software and video conferencing systems in order to communicate with each other (Zubair, 2016).

P2 Explain how to build cohesive teams that perform well

Introduction

Cohesive teams mean team members will work together and pursue one another in order to achieve a particular goal (Mulika, 2015). It is very much essential to solve disputes among team members and to achieve a particular goal effectively and efficiently. Team cohesiveness is very much essential for Royal Dutch Shell. Therefore; Now I am going to explain how to build a cohesive team for Royal Dutch Shell;

Setting Team goals

At first, team goals should be specified. Why the team has been designed and for what purpose? If the team members are well known about the purpose of the team, then they will work tighter in order to achieve the common goal (Mulika, 2015).

Dealing with group conflict

Group Conflict may occur among individuals of a group. It may occur when the individual’s need is different from the group’s goals or norms (Kulvisaechana, 2015). In order to get the best output of a team, the leader of the team must mitigate the group conflict in an efficient and effective way before it clashed. The team leader may deal with the group conflicts in the following ways;

  1. Acknowledge the conflict
  2. Providing conflict resolution training
  3. Improving communication skills
  4. Find out if group members have conflicting needs
  5. clarifying positions of each team member
  6. providing third-party conflict mediation services
  7. End with a Win-Win Solution (Kulvisaechana, 2015).

Effective communication

In order to build a cohesive team, the group leader must ensure effective communication among members of the team (Kulvisaechana, 2015). If there is a communication gap, people will be unable to communicate with each other time which may lead to the digression of the team’s goal.

Effective leadership is essential to build a cohesive team. If the leader influence and motivate the team effectively, then a team member will diverse to achieve the team’s goal (Ceylan, 2015).
