1.0 Introduction

1.1 Research background

Work-life is influenced and impacted by so many things, where stress is playing a vital negative role nowadays. Survey says about 50% people of UK working in retail companies are more stressed than they were in 5years. Sainsbury, the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom is facing the same problem no differently. If we could ever measure the cost of this workers’ stress it will seem like a £300 billion loss for companies including Sainsbury’s to maintain their workers’ health (Murali et al., 2017). Nevertheless, this work stress is also impacting greatly on the organizations as well as their workers. Workers are working hard to maintain the company’s productivity and they are trying to provide good service with maximum customer satisfaction, which is leading them to a great amount of daily stress for the pressure (Roger and Petrie, 2016). Absenteeism is becoming a more common problem in work sectors because of the stressful life of the workers. 60% of this absenteeism is the result of stress.

Retailer organizations such as Sainsbury are keeping their workers under high pressure to ensure the success of the companies (Akgunduz, Y., 2014). Consequently, the workers are getting de-motivated daily for same boring works with a lot of pressure. Managers of these organizations are trying hard to hold a good company image which is also impacting them with mental stress every day. Research says, about 955 managers of retail companies including Sainsbury work beyond their work time, sometimes 48 hours weekly to ensure the company’s target achievement (Murali et al., 2017). Stress resulting in daily demotivation and low job satisfaction is reflecting from workers. Managers are trying to tackle the stress problem to create an understanding of value for money. On the other hand, the employee turnover rate is also increasing daily because of workload and stress. Moreover, workers are getting confused with their job state and responsibilities also. This is the reason why role ambiguity and role conflict problems are increasing prominently. If an office environment is making the workers uncomfortable with noisy situations and leading them to isolation, it will act as a barrier between them and their jobs (Wood et al., 2014).

1.2 Research significance

The UK has a good number of supermarkets leads them to compete with each other. To impress customers with their good services and to provide them satisfaction with proper customer care retail organizations including Sainsbury is trying their best. This intense competition with other retail companies is leading them towards immense pressure.  Supermarkets similar to Sainsbury offer many services including clothing, households, medicine, beauty care products, groceries and many other things to fulfill customer’s daily needs. About 148,500 employees are working daily in Sainsbury to offer their best services. In order to achieve prosper retail organizations depends on how much they are capable of impressing their customer with maximum satisfaction (Levy et al., 2017). Retail organizations such as Sainsbury create some instructions which employees need to follow when they have to deal with customers. Therefore, it becomes a daily challenge for the staff to impress every time. As a result, when a retail company such as Sainsbury fails to fulfill customer needs and their conflicting demands, the worker tends to lead to job stress.

This topic is selected for studying stress affecting job life since it is playing a vital negative role in the organizations of the world. In the UK, supermarket industries similar to Sainsbury are more difficult to handle than other industries as they offer interactions more directly to the customers. Therefore, following the new policies every day in order to create customer loyalty leads the staff into the trap of stress.

1.3 Aims and objectives

Aim

This study will therefore explain how the impacts of workload can discourage the employees caused by job stress. It will also identify the ways to increase motivations among the employees in their workplace of UK supermarket including Sainsbury.

  • To look for factors that influence staff in the workplace of Sainsbury, UK
  • To assess how job stress in the workplace of Sainsbury’s affect its staff motivation
  • To suggest the Sainsbury’s how it can reduce job stress in the workplace and increase its staff motivation

2.0 Literature Review

2.1 Theory of job stress

Job stress indicates the responses and emotions that are caused by the overburden of work that an employee has to deal with at the workplace. Stress occurs when a job becomes unenjoyable, the workload is very pressurizing and when the job conflicts with personal and works life. Moreover, when a load of unexpected responsibilities, deadlines and management become irrespirable, employees start to get de-motivated and stressed. Employees with their stressful life fail to complete job requirements, start to lose the capabilities to impress their customers and face lacking in their skills (Fink, 2016). The results are high employee turnover and great loss in business. However, Barsade (2015)said an award-winning researcher and teacher described that stress is not always harmful to a business as it can also work as a medium to push the staff for working more to improve their attentiveness for the company’s betterment.

2.2 Reasons for job stress in the UK supermarkets

UK supermarkets have workers facing daily work pressure and high stress. This results in their dissatisfaction and low motivation in their jobs. This job stress can be categorized into five sections according to Cooper and Marshal (2016). The first category falls into the factors where the job atmosphere is impacting the worker’s motivation directly. Retail organizations such as Sainsbury’s workers face these job stresses due to increase noise in working hours and handling the pick time management when the customers come great in number. Moreover, long working shifts can also cause stress. Retail industries depend on their customer demands and satisfaction. Therefore, when the workers try hard to fulfill every expectation of the customers they get stressed out and upset with their jobs. Introducing new technologies and getting familiar with these take time for an employee. Furthermore, the workers need the training to explain it to the customers properly……………………….
