Information Technology (IT) has been an integral part of modern businesses in current business world. This paper analyzes the impact of information technologies on business operations of Sainsbury, where Sainsbury is one the biggest retailers in UK. Sainsbury’s has been using IT for long time to manage its business network, storage and protection of data of its stakeholders, inventory system, customer relationship, and supply chain and logistics. Sainsbury has been using different types of information systems including decision support system, transaction processing system, and management information system.
Then, Sainsbury has been using different networking systems including wide area network, metropolitan area network, local area network, and wifi/wireless networking system for various business purposes. However, Sainsbury has to consider several ethical issues (such as consumer data protection, maintaining health and safety issues) in using IT. Sainsbury’s also follows seven key stages of a system development lifecycle.

In current business world, information technology (IT) is playing significant role in the way of business success and meeting organisational goals and objectives. Businesses are using IT mainly for simplifying their administrative operations, improving business performance and productivity. Businesses are using IT in their every single department including search and development, sales and marketing, human resource management, accounting and finance, operations, customer services, inventory and supply chain management. Additionally, Businesses are using IT to understand the chaining needs of their customers and market demand, to improve product and service quality along with integrity.
The key aims of this paper are to discuss and analyze how information technology is affecting business operations of a particular business called Sainsbury. This paper mainly consists two parts: literature review, and analysis and discussion. In the literature part, first, information technology and its roles in businesses are reviewed. Then, network technologies used in businesses are reviewed. Next, ethics and social issues of using technology are reviewed. Finally, the importance of internet and intranet are reviewed. In the second part of this paper, role of IT in Sainsbury is analyzed and discussed, and network technology used in Sainsbury is discussed. Additionally, ethics and social issues in the use of Sainsbury’s IT are discussed along with the importance of internet and intranet in the business of Sainsbury. This section also discusses different stages of a system development lifecycle in term of Sainsbury.
Sainsbury is one of the biggest supermarket chain and retailers in UK. It serves millions of customers in every week by its thousands of dedicated and devoted employees. It has introduced different to maintain its business functions and operations, where IT department plays significant roles to gain its business success. Sainsbury is using IT in its every business department and function including human resource management, sales and marketing, customer relationship management, research and development, operations, supply chain and inventory.

Then, businesses maximize their commercial advantages using different information technologies (Cichetti, 2017).
For example, Sainsbury has introduced its website to offer online selling that has given huge success to its business. Next, businesses use IT to utilize their resources efficiently. For example, Dell uses real-time inventory and supply monitoring system to produce particular number of products. Additionally, IT plays significant role in improving business performance by using different IT tools like executive information system, and online analytical processing system. Further, IT has brought huge opportunity of e-commerce that is giving advantages to both consumers and sellers to buy and sell through online.
