1.0 Introduction
Wachtel (2016) stated that Therapeutic communication is defined as the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient. Nurses and other healthcare professionals use therapeutic communication techniques to provide support and information to patients (Knapp, 2017). This assignment is divided into four sections. The first section describes the case scenario and explains how to build a therapeutic relationship with the patient. The second section critically discusses at least two helping skill approaches, models, or frameworks that could use in that case scenario situation. The third section considers one most appropriate helping skill approach/ model/ framework in the case scenario situation. The fourth section critically reflects on the lessons that can be learned from using such an approach.
2.0 Describe the case scenario that you were given. Explain how you would build a therapeutic relationship with the patient
According to the case scenario, it is seen that Andy is a 60 years old man who lives in a small flat in a deprived area of a large city. He was the laborer on a building site and for the past 20 years, he has not worked. About ten years ago, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He is always a heavy drinker and smoker and does not co-operate well with services. Most of the money of his spends on alcohol and cigarettes. He rarely shows up at his medical appointments with either the medical doctors or other specialists. He ends up back in the hospital when things go wrong with him. I am caring for Andy over his last visit to the hospital because he admitted with severe shortness of breath and cough. In my last shift, I notice that he does not sleep and he is quite agitated. So I decided to start a conversation with him to identify what is going wrong with him.

As Hammond and Smith (2016) said that a therapeutic relationship between the nurse and patient is defined as the helping relationship that is based on mutual trust and respect, the nurturing of faith and hope, being sensitive to self and others, and assisting with the gratification of the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs through proper knowledge and skill of the nurse or therapist. This caring relationship develops when the nurse and the patient come together at the moment that results in harmony and healing. To build up the therapeutic relationship with my patient, first of all, I introduce myself properly to my patient Andy and do a handshake, and call him by his name.
