Gender equality in the UK.
Employment opportunities and pay.
Carter (2018) stated that gender equality can be defined as equal rights and opportunities for both women and men. Normally, it is not stated that women and men are the same but the rights, responsibilities and opportunities have to same for both men and women. Gender discrimination creates the difference between men and women on the rights, responsibilities and opportunities. In the case of the UK, there is also a lack of gender equality in the field of workings, politics, parenting and other sectors. This assignment analysis the position of gender equality in the UK by considering employment opportunities and pay politics and parenting position of male and female.
Gender equality in the UK
The United Kingdom is a developed country and the government has tried to ensure gender equity in the country. In 2019, this country has attained 72.2 points out of 100 points (Clifford, 2019). The position of the United Kingdom’s gender equity can be measured in terms of the following factors.
Employment opportunities and pay
One important factor by which gender equity can be established is the fair opportunity of employment and pay for both males and females in the workplace (Aleksandraand Gordon, 2020). In the UK, the Equality Act 2010 gives a legal framework to ensure equality of opportunity for both males and females in the workplace. This Law also protects a person from unequal treatment and helps to build an equal society. However, In UK, the employment opportunities are not the same for males and females (Aleksandraand Gordon, 2020). Most of the companies have more male staff than female staff. The reasons for getting jobs for male staff are numerous. Firstly, male workers are highly educated and qualified and they are doing challenging tasks than the female workers. The female workers don’t physically strong like men that are another reason of unequal employment opportunity in the UK. The gender pay gap between male and female employees was 15.5% in 2020 that was 17.4% in 2019 (Aleksandraand Gordon, 2020).
Additionally, male workers earn more than 10 percent than women. Joyce (2019) stated that the main reason behind the pay gap is that the male staff are holding the top position of most of the companies whereas female workers hold only a small part of the top position. Due to enough skills and experience, male staffs get the promotion facility that also makes difference between the pay scale of males and females (Joyce, 2019). That is why; the UK government has to take additional programs for females for making them skilled and qualified by which they can perform better than males. The skills and experience of female workers, UK government support and employers’ support can reduce the inequality between the opportunity of employment and pay of males and females.
In the Political field of UK, the women have significant influence but are not equal to men. In 1919, the first woman elected to Westminster was Constance Markiewicz. After that, the number of female participants is increasing day by day. In the case of the House of Commons, the total number of MPs is 650 whereas females are 220 (UK Parliament, 2020). In the case of the Conservative party, the total number of MPs is 365 whereas females are 87. In the case of the Labor party, the total number of MPs is 202 whereas females are 104. In the case of SNP, the total number of MPs is 49 whereas females are 16 (UK Parliament, 2020). From this data, it has revealed that the UK government could not be established equal opportunity for males and females in the political fields.
It has many reasons. Firstly, women are not concerned about the political factors of the country and they are not interested to involve in the political party. Joyce (2019) stated that women do not have enough knowledge about the political system and they think political issues are very critical and requiring diplomatic knowledge. Jorgen (2019) noted that the rate of female politicians in the UK is increasing day by day. Enough opportunity is also available in this country to be a female politician in the UK. The government of the UK has to take initiative for motivating females to become politicians and contribute to the development of the country.
Parenting represents the maintenance of a child by which a child can be grown effectively. According to Timmons (2019), Parents help their children to speak, play, teach and care for all things. Both fathers and mothers have significant roles in the management of children’s needs and requirements. In the case of Parenting, both males and females have played equal roles. However, In UK, the mothers have more roles and responsibilities to take care of the child. The male has the responsibility to bear the cost of the children’s growth (Farley, 2019). The males perform the main parent role in the UK because they are the key person of a family. The females are more dependent on the husband and children are also getting money from the father (Clifford, 2019). Therefore, the parenting sector of the UK has some unequal situations that hamper gender equality in society. For this reason, the government of the UK should need to take proper steps to establish equal parent opportunities for the male and females for their child in the UK.
In summary, Gender equality and Gender discrimination are opposite terms. Gender equality indicates equal rights for both men and women whereas gender discrimination makes the differences between the rights of men and women. In the UK, gender equity is not perfectly established because of several reasons. This report has identified that the males and females of the UK don’t have equal employment opportunities as well as they don’t get equal pay for their jobs. The unequal situation in the workplace has occurred due to high level of education, quality and skill of males than the women in the UK region. Women’s participation in the political party is also less in the UK because women do not have interests and have a lower chance to do well in the political field. This report also identified that the parenting case in the UK has also lacked gender equality because the children are grown up by the name of the father, not by the mother. For this reason, the UK government has to take initiatives to establish gender equality in the working section, political segment, parenting case and others.
