The current leading tourist destination in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is a popular tourist destination. It has endless destinations to explore and enjoy. It has many sporting venues, art galleries, museums, theme parks, landmarks, monuments, beaches, casinos and many shopping hubs. The United Kingdom is also known as the land of museums with different cultures, cuisines, religions and politics. Its capital is London and it has many important monuments and government buildings. There are also other major cities like Manchester, Glasgow, and Cambridge etc. The largest city is London that is home to many museums, skyscrapers and theaters. It is located on the west coast of Europe and is considered a leading tourist destination in the entire world. It is rated as the 8th biggest tourist destination. The foreign tourist has spent $17.2 billion in United Kingdom (UK tourist report, 2009). The UK is in the top ten list of favorite tourist destinations and the country experienced around 65 million visitors in 2012.
The tourism industry has emerged as a global economic sector. A tourist destination can be defined as a city or town that generated revenue accruing from tourism (Bierman, 2003). Tourist destinations facilitate the generation of income in the economy and introduce the areas that would remain untouched otherwise. The United Kingdom and other tourist destinations worldwide generate large revenue that contributes to the total world’s GDP. Annually the tourism industry generates almost $1.3 trillion in the economies of various destinations. The industry is developing at a very high speed. As per a report by UNWTO the international tourism will reach 1.8 billion by the year 2030. The industry is growing by 89% annually. The growth of the tourism industry has turned 1 billion tourists into 1 billion opportunities. UNWTO is the UN agency that is dedicated to the tourism industry. UNWTO assists the destinations in their sustainable positioning in national and international markets. The tourism sector is the fastest-growing sector in the world’s economy.
The statistics to determine tourism destination trends and predict future trends
Tourism in the United Kingdom is increasing with rapid speed. As per the statistical data, the major foreign tourist to the United Kingdom comes from The United States of America and the American visitors spend £2.1bn in 2010 (“Countries whose residents provided the most visits to the UK”. The analysis is done by breaking down the tourism industry of the United Kingdom into various sectors –

As per the analysis in 2012 the most challenging factors of European tourism are increased cost of living, economic uncertainty and political unrest in the tourist destinations.
