An analysis of continuing professional development and the requirement for individual and organizational development

Meaning of continuing professional Development

Argandona (2016) mentioned that Continuing Professional Development can be defined as the process of identifying, planning, performing, reviewing and reflecting on the activities. All functions of Continuing professional development are performed to develop the professional skills of the individual and organizational development (Armstrong and Michael, 2011). The following diagram represents that, a person can run the continuing professional development by identifying the key factors for professional development, then making a plan about the continuing professional development and implementing the plan into action.

After that, the person needs to review the actual performance and taking corrective action for the better reflection of continuing professional development (Barney, 2014). Becker and Gerhart (2017) stated that continuing professional development is a continuous process of developing individual and organization skills in respect of the professional activities of a firm. Continuing professional development helps to improve the professional knowledge of employees of the firm on a continuous basis, not a temporary basis (Armstrong and Michael, 2011).

Features of CPD

Chi and Lin (2011) stated some of  the features of the continuing professional development   process are described below:

Documented process: Continuing professional development is regarded as a documented process of developing individual and organization skills in respect of the professional activities of a firm (Chi and Lin, 2011).

Self-directed: Continuing professional development is self-directed not directed by others. It is directed as a continuous basis for developing the professional skills of individuals (Chi and Lin, 2011).

Focus on learning experience: Continuing professional development plan is prepared on the basis of the individual learning experience, training and development (Chi and Lin, 2011).

Help to set development plan: Continuing professional development helps the individual and organization to set the development plan of professional skills.

Formal and informal learning: Continuing professional development is established by the combination of formal and informal learning (Chi and Lin, 2011).

Difference between organizational and individual learning, training and development

Conger and Kanungo  (2017) said that organizational learning is the learning process by which individuals learn something in an interactive and collaborative way. In the process of organizational learning, employees are sharing the information among themselves to make a new decision or understand something interactively (Den and Verburg, 2017). Organizational training and development is similar to organizational learning by which all individuals get the facility of training and development programs of the firm.

On the other hand, Individual learning can be explained as the process of learning something by the individual solely (Evans and Davis, 2018). It is the personal knowledge and experience of a person gaining from the internal and external environment of the firm. Hall (2015) mentioned that Individual training and development is similar to individual learning by which individual gets the facility of training and development programs of the firm…………………….
