Task 1.4: The Company is suggested to implement one of the suggestions to reduce the waste within an organizational context.

Task 1.5: Evaluate the impact of change.

Task 2.1 Explain what is meant by ‘diversity’ in a business context

Task 2.2 Recognise the benefits of having a diverse workforce.

Task 2.3 Compare how a range of organizations promote diversity.

Task 2.4 Explain how they can promote diversity within their place of work.

Task 2.5 Summarise legal and organizational guidelines that govern diversity within the workplace.

Task 1.1: The Company is required to produce a report on ‘improving the sustainability within a business environment’ by ‘analyzing the benefits of keeping the waste to a minimum. 

According to O’Reilly (2018), reducing waste is good for reducing all three of the triple bottom lines of:

  • Environment
  • Financial (the project budget and the company’s business)
  • Social/community impact:

Environmental

According to Barlaz (2016), Conserve space in existing landfills and clean fills and reduces the need for future landfills and clean fills. Reduce pollution and energy consumption associated with the manufacture of new materials. For destructive demolition, reduce other impacts (e.g. noise, dust, and traffic) on surrounding properties and streets.

Financial

For construction, more efficient use of products means reduced costs of purchasing new materials. Improve work efficiencies through accurate detailed design, a focus on reducing rework, temporary works, and mistakes. Reduce waste disposal costs. For demolition, earn revenue from salvaged building parts and recycled materials (Barlaz, 2016). Improve the productivity of staff.

Deliver Customer Service in a Business Environment with ‘added value’

Social

Minimize the effect of hazardous or nuisance wastes on the community by sound management. Innovation and challenges (for example, the training and skills required for deconstruction) can help to attract and retain employees who are keen to develop skills. A high level of client satisfaction could enhance the company’s image and encourage repeat business (Barlaz, 2016). Improve site safety through better waste management. For demolition, reduce risks from hazardous materials due to more careful dismantling techniques and correct removal and disposal (e.g. asbestos).

Employee engagement

According to Barlaz (2016), though sustainability efforts begin with the company’s CSR, getting employees involved is imperative to successful initiatives, because they’re the ones who make the biggest impact executing them. Start a “green team” for employees to meet and discuss ways to make changes that will have an everyday impact. These can be simple things such as starting a recycling program in the office, or huge initiatives like Xerox’s Community Involvement Program, which directly involves employees in community-focused sustainability initiatives. Not only does this garner community recognition, but also teaches employees how they play a part in sustainability. Further than just playing a part at work, these everyday initiatives engage employees to take those initiatives home with them, thus creating an even greater impact.
