The purpose of this study is to obtain examples of how companies have been actively involved in the health and safety of their employees (Ramsey, 2016). The selected organization for this assignment is Ocado. This assignment focuses on four key tasks. The first task of this assignment explains the legal requirements and regulations for ensuring the health, safety, and security of those employed in the business. The second task describes the requirements for a healthy and safe workplace, as applied to the physical environment and equipment used in Ocado. The third task explains the roles and responsibilities for the health and safety of key personnel in Ocado. Ocado is a British online supermarket that describes itself as ‘the world’s largest dedicated online grocery retailer’. In contrast to its main competitors, the company has no chain of stores and does all home deliveries from its warehouses. In the United Kingdom, there are many regulations relevant to safety and health at work. Many of these give effect to European Union directives. The purpose of the Work Health and Safety laws (WHS laws) is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of employees, volunteers, and other persons who are at or come in to contact with a workplace. Employees nowadays have more and more rights and responsibilities and laws have been put into place to ensure both the employees and employers are working together to make sure everyone within the operational department is safe (Bolton, 2018).
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1974
Responsible for the enforcement of other laws and statutory instruments related to the health and safety functioning functions and environment, including those of the local authority (and other force enforcement authorities). The Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974 (also known as the HSWA, HSW Act, 1974 Act or Smile) is the primary part of the law covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. Employers must prepare and review a safety policy and bring their employees to the notice. The Workplace (Health, Safety, and Welfare) Regulations 1992
These rules are for the ‘workplace’ (trying to ensure that no premises or part of premises that are not an interior courtyard and are available) as a workplace. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
The electricity at work regulations 1989 act is very effective for the entire business sectors as well as Ocado. All electrical equipment at Ocado in the science department is tested before being used by employees or placed in the science department and they need to be frequently checked and monitored. If there are any damaged or pieces of electrical equipment that need to be thrown or replaced, then this should be taken care of to prevent an accident or injury from happening within the science department.
Around 1000 accidents happen per year from shocks or burns in the workplace which is why this act is extremely important to follow carefully and successfully. Expert technicians are allowed to use electric sockets in the classroom to carry out this work and are assured that no one will receive an electric shock or cause self-dangers (Adams, 2017).
The Working Time Regulations 1998
These Regulations implement two European Union directives on the organization of working time and the employment of young workers (under 18 years of age). The Regulations cover the right to annual leave and to have rest breaks, and they limit the length of the working week (Smith, 2017). Key protections for adult workers include a 48-hour maximum working week. Employers have a contractual obligation not to require a worker to work more than an average 48-hour week (unless the worker has opted out of this voluntarily and in writing); minimum daily rest periods of 11 hours, unless shift-working arrangements have been made that comply with the Regulations; and an uninterrupted 20-minute daily rest break after six hours’ work, to be taken during, rather than at the start or end of the working time……………………..
