P1 Explain the legal requirements and regulations for ensuring the health, safety, and security of those employed in the business
As a Health and Safety Assistant at Boots, I have several important responsibilities. There are many laws and regulations that make the work environment a safe place to work. Health and Safety in the Work Act 1974 mean that all employers provide a healthy and safe workplace, not only for their employees but also for other people visiting the workplace. It also requires that the business provide no toxic material to the public and the general atmosphere. This requires that employees take reasonable precautions to protect others in the workplace, such as themselves.
Businesses like the Citizens Advice Bureau will have an impact on the Health and Safety Act of 1974 because it will force them to ensure that the building they are working on meets the health and safety standards. (Bennett, 2017). This would include things like fire exits to make sure that the working environment is safe but also things like no smoking and smoking areas to make sure that the working environment is healthy.
The business would have to make sure that any visitors would be easily informed about health and safety within the business, in Citizen Advice Bureau this was mainly done by posters and signs like Firs Aid or Fire Alarm, because of that this will make sure that the business follows the Act of Health and Safety at Work. Each person involved in the Boots plays a variety of roles in ensuring the safety and security of the business place.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1974
The management of Health and Safety at Work regulations 1974 will protect staff in the science department but also will protect people not working by people who are working. There are a lot of potential hazards that could occur inside the science department because they use heavy and fragile equipment that is extremely expensive to obtain and to replace therefore this needs to be handled correctly. Boots follow this act by ensuring all staff in the science department have the right training and knowledge of how to avoid and handle potential accidents. The science department also completes risk assessments after an accident occurs as this is following the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Bennett, 2017).
Boots make sure they have specialized technicians to handle the chemicals so they provide protection for themselves. Risk assessment should include a few essential things; Identifying hazards, personnel identified, the severity of the risk, recording of inquiries. The law states that if a business employs 5 or more people, they must complete a written health and safety policy that includes 3 parts. Includes goals and goals of what will be achieved in the direction of health and safety in the workplace. All equipment needs to be regularly maintained and replaced. The manufacturer’s maintenance schedule should be followed such as the proposed replacement deadline.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
To protect the health, safety, and well-being of those in the workplace, to protect others against health or safety risk in the workplace, an Act to further regulate the prevention and use of unlawful acquisition, possession, and use of hazardous substances and certain emissions to the atmosphere. For control; to make further provision of employment treatment counseling services; Amending the Building Rules, and Laws relating to the Building (Scotland) Act 1959; And for connected purposes.
Health and Safety Act 2008 19 1978 Increasing the power of legalization by imposing harsh sentences on workers who fail to follow the law is a good thing because it will stop people from disobeying the 1974 law. At Boots, all employees have the responsibility of taking reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and other people in taking responsibility. This requirement that employers must have a written health and safety policy and update it, which is created in conjunction with the law and in consultation with employees or their representatives.
The Workplace (Health, Safety, and Welfare) Regulations 1992
These Regulations are concerned with the details of basic provisions in, and facilities for, workplaces. They contain details on matters such as sanitary provisions, standards of housekeeping and cleanliness, temperature, ventilation, decoration etc as well as materials of construction (e.g. glazing) and the required provisions for safety. The legislation is applicable to all workplaces provided for employees under Morrison control, either permanent or temporary. Workplaces must be properly ventilated with fresh or purified air.
In the majority of cases, windows or other openings will be sufficient. A supply rate of five to eight liters per second per occupant is expected. Departments are not expected to make or have carried out measurements of supply rates unless there are exceptional circumstances when the Surveyor should be consulted.
The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995

Boots have an on-site medical room which has the latest first aid kit and other appropriate equipment needed in case of a potential injury or illness, however if they feel it is serious or needs further action they will fill out a risk assessment immediately and refer them to the hospital or where necessary.
