Introduction
The world economy is going under a global crisis due to Covid-19. The United Kingdom has also faced the Covid-19 situation and lockdown was declared from March 2020 to June 2020. At this time, the businesses and shops were closed. The UK government has announced the safety policy for retailers’ stores from June 2020. This report focuses on the key challenges faced by the retailers and the application method safety guides for ensuring safety and attracting customers to sustain their business after 2nd lockdown planned in November 2020.
The key challenges facing business
The United Kingdom is one of the serious hotspots of Covid-19. Therefore, the UK government has taken a plan for a second lockdown from November and set up safety guidelines for running the business functions (Blackall, 2020). That is why; the businesses and shops of the UK have faced serious challenges due to lockdown. Joy (2020) stated that the retailers are falling under uncertainty about the Covid-19 situation. They need to take quick actions and decisions for the guidelines of the government that hamper the business regular operations. The business environment is changing rapidly due to the spread of Covid-19. The potential customers of the retailers also face the fear, anxiety and hopelessness for their life that ultimately reduce the sales and profits of retailer shops (Lajante, 2020). The Covid-19 situation also creates a financial crisis all over the UK (Stahel, 2020). The lockdown policy of the UK government has largely affected the retailer shops negatively because they are not running their regular business activities.
Key safety guide from the government
Most of the European countries including the United Kingdom are getting the main spot of Covid-19. Therefore, the UK government has taken a plan for a second lockdown and set up safety guidelines for running the business functions. The UK government has set up safety guidelines for High street retailers and department stores, book shops, electronics retailers, tailors, hair salons, hotels and guest accommodation, restaurants, bars, heritage venues studios, indoor markets, and shops selling clothes, shoes and toys (Lajante, 2020). Firstly, Retailers should protect customers and employees by limiting the customer’s number to entering the shop at one time, placing protective coverings, using masks and hand sanitizations, maintaining social & physical distance and regular checking and cleaning the shops and materials. Then, the retailers must display a notice visibly outside and inside the shops for their employees, customers and other visitors by which they can be maintaining the guidelines properly.
Viewpoints from business and other stakeholders
Blackall (2020) stated that the business organization has faced legislation challenges due to the safety guidelines. But both the business firms and other stakeholders including customers, owners, creditors and distributors are feeling good and appreciated the government for setting the safety guidelines because it saves the life of human beings from the dangerous Coronavirus (Stahel, 2020)
Recommendations
The Covid-19 situation has created a challenging situation for business firms including retail shops (Lajante, 2020). Therefore, Retail stores should protect customers and employees by following the safety guidelines of the UK government. Firstly, retail stores should ensure the safety of the employees by providing mask and sanitization facilities. Then, retailers should limit the customers to enter the shop at the same time. Thirdly, Retail stores should ensure protective coverings and ensure mask and hand sanitization for the customers. Then, retail stores should ensure social & physical distance and clean the shop regularly. Then, the retailers must display a notice of safety guidelines for the employees and customers. Finally, the retail shops should depend on the online business system to reduce the number of customers in the physical shops.
Conclusion
In summary, this report revealed that retail shops have faced several challenges due to Covid-19, lockdown and the safety policy of the UK government. The proper following of the safety guidelines can help UK retail shops to mitigate the challenges and ensure the good position of the business and economy at the time of global crisis created for the Covid-19.
