Abstract

Information technology is the modern innovation of modern science that helps to create communication channels more smoothly and effectively. In most countries, the popularity of retailing business organizations is increasing day by day. The operating functions of retail business organizations include both online and offline ways. At this technology day; most retail businesses depend on information technology (Das, 2014). Not only the productivity but also the performance of the retail sectors depends on the proper use of information technology in communication.

In retail organizations; Information technology positively affects the production, marketing, financial and human resources activities. Information technology also affects the collection and storage of business and customers’ data through applying various types of IT tools (Morris and Schindehutte, 2015). Information technology also helps to collect market information and survey for identifying the opportunities and challenges of the retail business industry.  Customer relationship management, human resource management, customers’ satisfaction, employees’ satisfaction and overall performance of the retail firm depend on largely the effective use of information technology tools and software.

1.0 Introduction

At present; the use of Information technology is increasing day by day in all sectors of a country. In most countries, the popularity of retailing business organizations is also increased. At this technology day; most of the retail businesses depend on information technology (Morris and Schindehutte, 2015). In this assignment; the necessity and impact of information technology (IT) on the performance of the retail sector is described. This assignment selects a retail sector firm that is the Marks and Spencer. Marks and Spencer is a British multinational retailer.  In the 1st section; the assignment represents the related literature review on the Information technology sector.  In the 2nd section; this assignment represents the impact of Information technology on Marks and Spencer as well as ethical and social issues of information technology. In the third section; this paper identifies the various networking technologies and the benefits of Intranet and Internet regarding the Marks and Spencer. In the final section of the assignment; the systems development stages are described briefly.

2.0Literature review

2.1 Information Technology

According to Persaud and Azhar (2015), the meaning of Information technology refers to the application of the computer for storing, retrieving, and transferring data and information from one IT tool to another IT tool.  Pantano (2014) mentioned that Information Technology (IT) also included the programs of computers and the channel of communication networks. According to Narayana (2016), Information Technology (IT) includes several tools and techniques for storing, retrieving, and transferring data and information of individuals or businesses. According to Lynch (2014), database management and communication channel are the key functions of information technology from the business perspective. Customer relationship management, human resource management, customers’ connectivity and satisfaction, employees’ relationship and satisfaction and overall performance of an organization depend on the effective use of information technology tools and software.

2.2 Information Technology in the retail sector

Zhao (2015) mentioned that retail businesses depend on information technology. In retail organizations; information technology positively affects production, marketing, financial and human resources activities. Leidner (2013) said that Information technology also affects the collection and storage of business and customers’ data through applying various types of IT tools. Information technology also helps to collect market information and do surveys for identifying the opportunities and challenges of the retail business industry (Krafft and Mantrala, 2016). Customer relationship management, human resource management, customers satisfaction, employees’ satisfaction and overall performance of the retail firm depend on largely the effective use of information technology tools and software (Persaud and Azhar, 2015). The information helps to retain the information about the storage of raw materials, production amount, and storage of final products effectively and efficiently product information of the retail sector.

2.3 Information Technology in Management of the retail sector

Persaud and Azhar (2015) said that all of the functions of management can be performed effectively by using the tools and applications of information technology.  The management body of the retail organization manages customer relationship management, human resource management, customers satisfaction, employees’ satisfaction and overall performance of the firm. The information technology tools and applications help the effective management of customer relationships and the satisfaction of the customers (Pantano, 2014). IT tools and applications also help the retail business organizations to collect and store the customers’ demands and choices by which they can produce good quality and desirable products within due time. Finally; the retail business organizations connect with customers and attract them to buy products and services. Human management and employees’ satisfaction are also ensured by applying the tools and applications of information technology. The information technology ensures better communication between management and subordinates that helps to ensure the productivity and performance of the rattail sectors.

1.4   Impact of Information Technology on productivity and performance of employees in the retail sector

Narayana (2016) said that human management and employees’ satisfaction are also ensured by applying the tools and applications of information technology. The information technology ensures better communication between management and subordinates that helps to ensure the productivity and performance of the rattail sectors. Lynch (2014) revealed that managers can provide accurate guidelines to the right person at the right time by using IT tools and applications. This has a good impact on the performance of the employees.  The proper observation of the employees by using IT tools and applications also helps to improve the performance of the workers. The employee performance and productivity rate also can be stored through using IT tools and applications (Zhao, 2015). The managers of the retail sector also can take rapid decisions by performing meetings virtually through video conferencing, messaging and other ways of information technology…………………………………..
