1.0 Introduction
This case study investigates the styles of entrepreneurship on a greatly known entrepreneur personality. This paper also conducts a study on their successes and the motivation behind those achievements. In this article, there are two parts. The first section consists of the introduction, academic, family, and financial background of James Dyson, who is a successful entrepreneur. The first section also discusses the motivating factors that worked behind those achievements in his life and in the entrepreneurship practices. The second part is about the styles of entrepreneurship of James Dyson. The second section also explains how James Dyson practices social entrepreneurship by implying various theories and models.
1.1 About James Dyson?
Sir James Dyson is a British inventor. He is also and designs engineer. He founded the company named Dyson Company. He was born on May 2 in 1947. He invented the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner based on the theory of cyclonic separation (Farrell, 2017). When he invented his first vacuum cleaner he mainly focused on two ideas. In his ideas regarding vacuum cleaners, James Dyson replaced the vacuum bag in the machine when the bag started to fill with dirt. Though Dyson’s vacuum cleaners are pricier than a regular vacuum cleaner,
however, the quality of Dyson’s vacuum cleaners are also superior. Dyson always ensures that its products are extensively tested and also have unique designs. James Dyson is also famous for inventing sea trucks in 1970 while he was studying at the Royal College of Art (Dyson, 2014).
1.2 Family background of James Dyson
James Dyson was born in Norfolk, England in the year of 1947. He had three siblings. He was the youngest among his siblings (The Royal Society, 2018). In childhood, he went to a boarding school in Norfolk called Gresham’s School. Dyson was brought up in a rural area of England and has a very normal childhood until he was nine years old. When he was nine years old his father died due to cancer. His father was a teacher in the area of Norfolk (Dyson, 2014).

Dyson went to his boarding school from the year 1956 to 1965. Then after completing his graduation Dyson got himself admitted into Byam Shaw School of Art. There he spent about one year. After that, he went to the Royal College of Art to study furniture and interior design. However, after studying interior design he finally switched his subject to engineering (The Royal Society, 2018).
1.4 Motivational factors of Dyson
David McClelland first established the need theory of motivation. He explained how one’s motivation is impacted by the needs for achievement, affiliation and power. McClelland established this need theory just after Maslow established his Hierarchy theory. In this theory, McClelland discussed three types of needs. They are (1) need for achievement, (2) need for affiliation and (3) need for power.
In this paper to explain Dyson’s motivations for his successes in his life, need theory has been used.
