Businesses, small or large, often face difficulty when there exists tough competition in the market. With the passage of time, the organization must learn how to organize their internal working through efficient setting, targeting opportunities and making variations accordingly. Also, as the competition increases, an organization seeks ways to pinpoint areas that need improvement, value and disposal of waste. For that purpose, a quality improvement strategy is implemented. The purpose of the quality improvement strategy is stated by Steiss (2019), according to which a quality improvement plan intends to enhance an organization’s quality in required areas. It includes key information about how an organization will design, implement, control and evaluate quality within specified areas. Once specific areas are identified, the quality improvement strategy will correlate to them.
According to Lewis (2017), almost every organization relies on a quality improvement plan as it encompasses a framework for developing and improving processes. It acts as a living document that must be revisited on a monthly basis to record accomplishments, lessons learned and changing the company’s priorities. As per Steiss (2019), an effective quality improvement strategy includes direction, activities, timeline and assessment of quality along with opting for a formal model for quality improvement, implementing metrics to improve outcomes and ensuring that all workers understand the metrics. If such effective QIS is implemented, the result will be improved quality, low price, and high productivity, less delivery time, high employee morale and low turnover.
Therefore, the essay aims to present a report on how a companywide quality improvement strategy for Engineering Tooling Company can be introduced. For this purpose, the report will focus on Quality Management, Quality Assurance and Quality Control implications for ETC. Moreover, the report will also discuss the impact of the improvement strategy on sustaining the Culture of Quality in the company.
The Engineering Tooling Company (ETC) was established in the early 1960s, in the North East of England. The company provides services for the engineering industry such as engineer’s rules, calipers, scribes, and micrometers and a limited range of expensive long-lasting items. As the competition increases in the North East of East, globalization took over the engineering industry. Despite being based on strong financial support, a loyal workforce and committed workers, ETC needed to evolve into 21st-century philosophy. In 2010, the North East hospital Management board acquired funding to introduce surgery and other medical intervention techniques and signed a contract with ETC to supply handheld precision medical equipment for research purposes. The research succeeded and in 2012, the board signed a two-year contract with ETC to manufacture these products on large scale. The new invention expanded rapidly over the last three years and ETC received worldwide recognition. ETC realized that its successful intervention must be displayed and available to the customers, suppliers and investors as a world-class 21st-century organization with vision, energy, and conscience.
ETC is seeking a quality improvement strategy that ensures: quality assurance QA, total quality management TQM and quality control QC. Quality Assurance QA is a set of activities that ensures that an organization delivers the best product to its customers. As per Mittag (2018), Quality assurance QA is a set of cyclic steps i.e. plan, do check and act. These steps are normally used in designing products and implementing correct procedures to determine quality measures. Total quality management TQM is a management approach for long-term success through client satisfaction. As per Mang’eli et al., (2018), TQM mainly focuses on integrating new process-centered and customer-centered systems for continual improvement. TQM uses the organization’s core values in designing long-term goal attaining approaches. Lastly, quality control QC is a procedure that ensures that a product fits the quality criteria and meets the requirements. As per Keith (2017), quality assurance is often linked with quality control QC as both determine specific standards the product must meet.
Quality improvement goals and objectives
The first and foremost step is developing goals and objectives. As per Cagnin et al., (2019), setting clear goals and objectives informed priorities. ETC is going to establish its new intervention but before it, ETC needs a quality improvement plan to work on the required areas:
- As per Buttigieg et al. (2016), global standards define that goals must be measurable and must align with organizational commitment.
- ETC aims to reduce rework and increase safety along with predictability.
- ETC aims to prioritize risks and ensure that mitigation plans are present.
- Managing resource allocation will be given high priority and a comprehensive risk management plan will be in an individual repository.
- ETC targets the monitoring and improvement of training, deliveries, and corrective measures.
- ETC needs to ensure that a complete supplier performance management is available to develop supplier scorecards and simplify interaction with suppliers.
- ETC requires to enforce a gauge calibration system to ensure its medical devices are always compiled as per industry standards.
Implementing the quality management strategy to meet the goals and objectives
In order to implement a quality improvement strategy, various models and software are provided among which APQP fits the requirement of ETC. Therefore, the second step is designing activities to implement APQP to meet ETC defined goals and objectives. As stated above the first phase will be implementing APQP. The purpose of implementing APQP is because of ‘all in one nature. According to Nadia et al., (2016), APQP is important in developing a product quality plan for customer satisfaction as required by quality assurance QA. It also helps in digitizing data and tracking them in real-time for long-term revenue as stated by the total quality management system TQM. Moreover, APQP helps in delivering appropriate presentations and detection control supporting the quality efforts as per quality control QC requirements (Lingam, 2018).
As per Maundu (2018), when companies collaborated with large supply partners, they need to maintain the Supplier Quality Management System (SQMS) to meet customers’ expectations and ensure quality assurance QA within a company. In such situations, APQP is used to launch a product for public use. ETC will use APQP due to its expansion in medical devices.
