Project Management: PRINCE 2 in the Tesco contactless Clubcard (GC0112)
Executive Summary
The aim of this paper is to analyze and apply the PRINCE 2 methodology in the Tesco contactless Clubcard project. The finding of this paper discloses that PRINCE 2 methodology has both positive and negative impacts on the success of project work. The success of this methodology completely depends on the competency and professionalism of using the PRINCE 2 methodology in the project process.
The successful use of PRINCE 2 in the Tesco contactless Clubcard project can direct and guide the project manager and stakeholders about the project deliverables with quality and integrity within budget and estimated time. However, the finding of this paper discloses that the key limitation of this methodology is it does not focus on leadership and management practices in project work. 1.0 Introduction
The success of a particular project depends on using the appropriate project methodology. As the project methodologies, the widely used methodologies are PRINCE 2, PMBoK, and Agile Final. This paper critically analyses how PRINCE 2 methodology can be applied in a particular project, called Tesco contactless Clubcard project. This paper first defines the concept of project management and PRINCE 2 methodology. Then, this paper applies the Prince 2 methodology in the Tesco contactless Clubcard project. Finally, this paper concludes the finding and provides recommendations for the Tesco contactless Clubcard project.
2.0 Concept of project management
The term “project management” is defined by experts in different ways. According to Miller (2017), project management refers to the application of tools and techniques, knowledge and skills in a project that works to meet its objectives. Heldman (2010) said the main purpose of project management is to define the project problems and to plan, organize and control project activities to complete the project works on time within budget by maintaining quality and integrity.
In addition, project management includes selecting the right people for the right position, staffing, planning and organizing, and monitoring and checking the progress of project works on a regular basis, and taking actions as required (Badiru, 2012). To complete a project work successfully, Richman (2012) suggested the project manager apply Project Life Cycle (included in Appendix A) that focuses on four key steps- define, design, deliver and develop.

5.0 PRINCE 2 methodology and its advantages and disadvantages
“PRINCE 2” is well-known as well as widely used project management methodology. “PRINCE 2” methodology means Projects in Controlled Environment. This methodology was established while the government of the UK was subcontracted with a growing amount of work. However, this methodology includes great practice on the incorporation of the external agencies and internal teams. As Bonnie (2014) notes, the “PRINCE 2” methodology defines the justification and rationale of the business for project management. Then, “PRINCE 2” includes the method for project management of the business which is fitting every procedure to the structure of the project.
The “PRINCE 2” methodology concentrates on the project managers’ lifecycle. It makes sure that each stage in the lifecycle of the project is accomplished on time within budget. There are several advantages of this methodology which are: a) concentrate on the justification of the business; b) approach on the product-based planning; c) shares the project in the controllable or manageable steps; d) tailoring; and e) flexibility.
6.0 Application of PRINCE 2 methodology to the Tesco Contactless Clubcard Project
The PRINCE 2 methodology is based on seven principles, seven processes, and seven themes. The correlation between these three components is included in Appendix C. Heldman (2010) stated that stakeholders of a project significantly influence the success of a project. Therefore, it is essential for project managers and teams to conduct an effective stakeholder analysis before starting the project works and applying a particular methodology (like PRINCE 2) in a project works.
Thus, this paper conducts stakeholder analysis on Tesco contactless Clubcard project and identifies the power and influence of stakeholders (included in Appendix B) on the project. According to stakeholder analysis, the key stakeholders who have significant power and influence towards the project are customers, the board of Tesco governance, shareholders, Thames Card Technology, employees, and lenders…………………
