Background of the project management
The idea of project management first started through the concept of completing the Great Pyramid of Giza and constructing the Great Wall of China, which has converted into recent management science. Then, the project management was used as a management discipline first by the US military during the World War, forwarding to the civil sector in the middle of the last century.
Our Recommended Resources:
During this time it focused on different approaches to the Critical Path methods like activity-on-arrow diagrams, precedence, PERT, etc. Where during the 1950s and 19660’s project management was tracked as management science discipline, from1970’s the project management focused on project control, rather than the time span of the projects and it reduction. It was possible by the development of integrated computer-based management systems which enabled to integrate time, quality as well as costs. From the 1980’s most of the organizations have been using an integrated management system, but still, now some of the projects fail to deliver successful projects on time with maintaining quality and budget.
As a result, from the late 1980s, the project management has mainly focused on project manager interpersonal and softer skills including leadership, preservation, motivation, conflict management, team building, etc. By the 1990s the keyword “competencies” was focused on the discipline. At the same time, tow important issues were disclosed. Firstly, to deliver a successful project, the only project manager is not enough.
A good sponsor with accountable for the investment also important. In addition, the sponsor also needs to engage in project work to undertake project delivery and its assets or deliverables. Secondly, it is important to have users and/or operators to put deliverables and/or assets to work as well as to make the desired outcome for the business.
