Personal Statement
Higher education and research have come to the forefront of international debates about economic growth. There has been a growing consensus among policy-makers that post-industrial society requires more highly educated people with technical and professional skills in a knowledge-based economy. Doctoral education has become of paramount significance in a world where knowledge is the new ‘fuel’, the ultimate economic renewable to economic growth leading to a knowledge-based economy. A study shows PhD holders who have accumulated substantial human capital through education have been identified as “one of the key factors behind the creation of knowledge-based economic growth. This means doctoral experience entails beyond financial and career returns for PhD graduates and a knowledge-based economy. PhD holders identified further benefits of doctoral education beyond acquiring specialized knowledge. Benefits include a set of transferable skills: problem-solving, critical reasoning, thinking in-depth and from different angles and perspectives. These skills developed during the PhD – enabled them to make a difference in the workplace. In a word, doctorate holders can be innovative individually, and be able to make a difference in both academic and non-academic employment. Most importantly in non-academic employment where a more diversified workforce in terms of qualification levels can be expected, the PhD experience is perceived as adding value in distinguishing oneself from colleagues.
There is huge potential for PhD graduates to develop careers in the current world including in both developed and developing countries. From the perspective of Bangladesh (a developing country), there are huge opportunities to develop careers in both the private and public sectors. Most importantly, there is high demand for PhD graduates in the education sector of Bangladesh. There are about 50 private and 20 public universities in Bangladesh, where most of these institutions have a shortage of research skills and skills on teaching in the research sector. Thus, these institutions are mostly welcoming PhD graduates, mainly those who have graduated at reputed institutions in developed countries like the UK. On the other hand, a study shows a PhD graduate working in a Bangladesh ministry has reported that the PhD had helped him to be more critical and use his research skills to fulfill tasks compared to non-PhD graduates. In the same way, PhD graduates working in the private sector in Bangladesh have emphasized how the ability to think from different perspectives and solve problems was a point that differentiated them from their counterparts. Therefore, I believe if I can achieve a PhD degree, it will provide huge opportunities to gain my dream career in the future.
In consequence, after completing a BA (Hons) in Business Management at the University of Sunderland and an MSc in International Marketing at London Southbank University, I have intended to do PhD degree on a research topic based on my home country, Bangladesh. The chosen topic is “E-retailing in developing countries: investigating issues of consumer trusts in e-retailers in the perspective Bangladesh”. The reason behind choosing this topic is that e-retailing is now reshaping the way consumers purchase their products. Most importantly, e-retailing has been accepted as a proffered mode of shopping among the majority of consumers in developed countries including the UK, US, and EU. However, in many of the developing countries (including Bangladesh) e-retailing is still now a new phenomenon or in the initial stage. On the other hand, very poor researches have been done on e-retailing in developing countries like Bangladesh. In addition, the majority of retailers in developing countries (like Bangladesh) still now have poor knowledge on how to develop e-retailing platforms and gain customer trust in e-retailing. Therefore, the aim of my proposed PhD degree is to develop strategies and provide recommendations for e-retailers in developing countries including Bangladesh.
The knowledge gained through dissertations at my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees has improved my research and analytical skills that have influenced and motivated me towards the proposed PhD degree. In addition, several modules taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees have developed my interpersonal skills including presentation skills, time management skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills, management and leadership skills. These skills gained have also improved my confidence level to work on the proposed PhD degree. Further, working at several organizations in different positions for a long time has developed my skills on how to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical situation and how to deal with problems and environmental situations at workplace. This knowledge and experience, I believe, will help me to overcome the potential challenges in the proposed PhD research. In a word, I am very confident that my skills and experiences will assist me to successfully complete the proposed PhD degree on time.
In this circumstance, I have chosen London Southbank University to enroll in the proposed PhD degree. This is because the initial study shows that this university has the expertise to supervise me on the proposed research topic. I also believe achieving a PhD degree from a high-ranking university, like London Southbank University, will help to develop my career in the future. In addition, the exclusive resources, excellent learning environment, affordable tuition fees at London Southbank University along with its convenient location have encouraged me a lot. On the other hand, the reason for choosing a UK university (like London Southbank University) instead of a university in my home country, Bangladesh, is that most of the universities in the home country (Bangladesh) do not provide a Ph.D. degree. Although hardly universities (like University of Dhaka) offer Ph.D. degrees, they cannot ensure the quality that a UK university (like London Southbank University) can. Therefore, I believe London Southbank University can be a good place for me to study for the proposed Ph.D. degree. In this situation, I am very optimistic that London Southbank University will cordially consider my application and will provide me an offer for enrolling in the proposed Ph.D. degree………………………..
