Introduction
The aim of this reflective essay is to provide a reflection on my coaching session provided to Philippa for Janice Rowlands. This reflection highlighted what went well and what can be done differently in near future. Additionally, this reflection provides a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of the coaching and mentoring provided in the context of morale/performance improvement. This reflection also analyzes the skills, beliefs and values, attitudes and behaviors of effective and efficient mentors and/or coaches that motivate and influence the performance and morale of followers. Gibb’s reflective model is used for providing the reflection effectively and efficiently. Gibb’s reflective model is widely recognized for providing a reflection on any topic or experience. This reflective cycle includes five key stages that are description, feeling, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action (Williams et al., 2020).
Description
I have conducted the coaching session for Philippa who is a highly committed department manager within a company. As a microbiologist, she develops new methods of testing and deals with any problems raised in the production process for her company. She is very self-motivated and satisfied in her workplace. However, she does not understand the needs and expectations of her followers in the workplace. She has developed a system of team briefings that explains the policies and implications for her departments.
Although she provides fairly formal team briefings, it is considered that this is not effective enough that makes it difficult for her to implement her plan in the workplace. This is because some team members raise points in the meetings. Most importantly, people in the workplace are worried about the recent changes in business and dissatisfied in the workplace about what is happening. Thus, it has been essential to developing an effective coaching session for her (Philippa) to effectively train and develop her staff (follower), mainly for Janice Rowlands. Janice Rowlands is a senior microbiologist for five years in this company. She is now responsible for monitoring and devilment of workplace performance in the workplace.
Although she is motivated and satisfied in her workplace, she needs training and development to influence and motivate her followers towards improved performance and productivity along with organizational goals and performance. Therefore, I have arranged coaching for Philippa to offer this coaching to Janice Rowlands. This coaching mainly focuses on mental health issues, and how staff can overcome their emotional barriers working from home and can contact their colleagues on daily basis. I conducted this coaching session about two weeks ago. The duration of the coaching session was about two hours. This is the first formal coaching in my academic educational history. After developing the coaching session I invited Philippa and provided coaching for two hours, and guided her on how to train and develop her staff, Janice Rowlands.
Feelings
During the initial contract with Philippa, the head of department and manager, I have received the problems faced by her staff about what is happening in the workplace. Additionally, my discussion was broadly related to the roles and responsibilities of Janice Rowlands in her workplace along with her capabilities, capacities, communication issues, behavioral and attitudes issues, and any other issues including mental health. I applied a logical level model to discuss the issues and problems faced by staff in the workplace. I was also aware of these problems and issues and tried my best to meet them through training, mentoring intervention, and performance management. Thus, I developed coach at different levels and was very flexible at every level (McDermott, 2016).
When I met with Philippa, I felt easy and free to do general conversation and established a nice coaching session. Because before conducting a meeting with her I quickly moved to contract her and inform them about the aims and purpose of coaching and its approach. I ensured her confidentiality and other privacy issues of her personal and professional information. I also discussed the topic and goals. Thus, she was very happy to join in my coaching session. I started the session through a number of open questions that describe work-related challenges and her experiences. However, the questions were broadly consistent and explored the outcome that she is looking for to deal with her staff, mainly Janice Rowlands.
I felt that she had a lot to say and I gave her the opportunity to describe that and the future outcome that she is looking for. I was also concerned about the questions I asked incorrect manner. I asked her to describe her feeling about the questions and coaching session. In this case, she became quite emotional stated she felt successful and teary-eyed made me also emotional. Then, I asked her to describe her success history and feeling about this success. However, a few minutes later she became upset and outlined her feeling about the new things in her workplace, and mainly about worries of mental health issues. These highly personal and emotional issues made me concern and emotional. In a word, my feeling was that I enjoyed it a lot during the coaching session because it was my first time experience in any coaching session. Although I faced several problems during the coaching session, it has taught me a lot and develop my skills and experiences in coaching sessions.
Evaluation
As Philippa has already known me for some time, we had a good and reliable relationship between us. However, I was concerned about the forcing of adoption of coaching solutions in comparison to the way of mentoring. This is because I arranged the coaching session to meet the academic requirement and put into practice the theories, skills and experiences gained through formal lectures and supervised coaching practice sessions. This coaching session has developed my self-directed learning, learning and development experiences, personal growth, and performance (Bresser and Wilson, 2016). Philippa was loyal towards me because I honored and respected her a lot…………..
