Cole (2017) classifies management style in several distinctive categories, namely- Visionary, Authoritarian, Transactional, Laissez-faire and Democratic management style. The managers who go along with a visionary management style tend to follow charismatic, motivational and strategic qualities for overseeing business activities and to achieve the vision of the business. The transactional management style is based on offering prizes and stimulus to the employees to get the most out of them. On the other hand, when managers are the sole decision and policymakers and give specific direction to their subordinates, it is referred to as the authoritarian management style (Dadich and Doloswala, 2018). In a democratic management system, a cooperative policy-making approach is followed. The manager often takes suggestions from his subordinates for decision-making purposes. When the employees are trained and mentored to amplify their efficiency, this kind of management system is called the servant management style. Then there is laissez-faire which refers to a management style where the employees can state their opinion for decision and policy-making processes in the organization (Eden and Ackermann, 2018). Lastly, managers put in a centralized authority to generate business policies and implement them in an autocratic management style. The principles of management comprise Distribution of work, discipline, authority, the solidarity of order, compensation, centralization, stability, value and activity.
There are some functions performed by managers within an organization. Eden and Ackermann (2018) describe the duties of a manager by stating that he has to generate plans and make policies for the organization and manage all the requirements for the proper implementation of the plans and policies. Besides, the manager works as the director for the employees by maintaining business policies and providing instructions to achieve the goal of the business. In addition, managers are also responsible to carry out the controlling functions (Eden and Ackermann, 2018).
The management body of British American Tobacco follows the democratic management style to conduct their business activities all over the world. The decision-making process of BAT is decentralized and based on the priority of the task at hand (British American Tobacco, 2020). The upper and lower level works cooperatively in BAT. Their collaboration in planning business activities and policies is evident. Moreover, all the principles of management are followed by the managers of British American Tobacco. They are responsible for the organizing, planning, leading, staffing and controlling functions of the organization to accomplish the vision and mission of the company……………….
