1.0 Introduction
The success of a business organization depends on the effective management approach, suitable leadership style and effective structure and culture of the organization (Darrow, 2017). According to Taylor (2018), the power, conflicts and motivation level also affects the business performance in a significant way. This paper describes these factors on the basis of the company British American Tobacco plc (BAT). It is considered a British multinational company that operates its business globally. The main products of this company include cigarettes, tobacco and other nicotine. It was established in 1902 with headquartered in London, England. At present, this company has run its business functions in 180 countries (British American Tobacco, 2020). The brand image and profitability of this company are also high. In 2019, this company has earned Revenue of about £25.877 billion, an operating income of about £9.016 billion and Net income of about 5.849 billion (British American Tobacco Annual Report, 2019). The number of employees of this company is about 55,000.
The leadership techniques and management techniques of British American Tobacco are very much effective. The global business strategy of British American Tobacco is also effective by which this business firm has already run its business in several countries. This report firstly evaluates the management style with the principle and functions of management used by the CEO of British American Tobacco. After that, this report examines the necessary steps for developing structure and achieving high performance and good culture in British American Tobacco. Then, this report describes the suitable leadership style of the CEO of British American Tobacco by which this company can ensure a good performance level. After that, this report also evaluates the impact of power, influence and conflict in the working place of British American Tobacco. Management style can be categorized under different types including authoritarian, visionary transactional, democratic and laissez-faire management styles (Purcel, 2019). In the case of the authoritarian management style, the managers have decision-making power and apply clear direction and a controlling system to manage all the business functions. In the case of the visionary management style, the managers hold inspirational, charismatic, and strategic characteristics for managing business functions and attaining the business vision (Darrow, 2017). In the case of the transactional management style, the managers apply the rewards and incentives system for the employees for motivating and managing the employees. In the case of servant management style, the managers apply coaching, training, and mentoring system to increase the performance level of the employees. The democratic management style indicates that the managers apply supportive techniques to motivate the employees and take suggestions from them for finding the best way of making business policies of management.
In the case of the laissez-faire management style, the employees are getting the freedom to make decisions and implement the decisions in the workplace. In case of autocratic management style, the managers apply centralized authority to make business policies and decisions. Kevin (2017) stated that the principles of management include division of work, authority, discipline, unity of command and direction, remuneration, centralization, order, equity, stability, initiative and unity. The managers also perform several functions in the workplace. Baldacci (2018) mentioned that Managers make plans and policies of the organization and organize the all necessary things for implementing the plan. Then, managers perform staffing functions and monitor the performance level of the employees. The managers also direct the employees according to the business policies and guidelines to attain the business targets. The controlling functions are also performed by the managers.
In the case of British American Tobacco, the management body has applied the democratic management style to manage the business functions throughout the world. The decision of the BAT is decentralized and created on the basis of priority of work (British American Tobacco, 2020). Every decision of BAT is based on the discussion of upper-level managers and lower-level managers. The combined efforts of upper and lower-level managers are applied in British American Tobacco for developing business plans and policies (Smith, 2018). Additionally, the managers of BAT also have maintained the necessary principles of management. The managers of BAT have performed planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling functions of the organization for acquiring the ultimate targets and goals of the business.

Duggan (2019) noted that business organization needs to take necessary steps to set up the organizational structure for increasing level of performance of the employees. The culture of the organization has also a significant impact on the performance level of the employees. Therefore, good corporate culture should be established in the workplace. For this reason, British American Tobacco has applied necessary steps for developing the quality structure of the organization. Firstly, British American Tobacco has outlined the governance plan for establishing rules for operation for accomplishing the business functions with an effective chain of command (British American Tobacco, 2020). Then, the managers distribute the work to the ultimate employees (Duggan, 2019). thirdly, the managers allow the employees to connect with the upper-level managers to form an effective working structure. Communication is also important for an effective organizational structure. For this reason, British American Tobacco has ensured good communication among the various departments.
