1.0 Introduction
According to Gray (2019), project management can be defined as the planning and proper execution of that plan to the project work and make that project work successfully and timely. It is important to have proper management for every project work through which the project must be completed. Otherwise, there is a chance of having failure or any kind of problem in that project work. In this report, various kinds of project management tools and techniques and their functions and usefulness for the project are described.
1.1 Project management methods
Projects can be managed in both traditional and innovative ways. It is dependent on what kind of project needs to be done and in which case the project work is applied. There are some other factors like sections of the project, people involved with the project, complexity. Some of the management techniques are discussed below.
Classic technique
The classic technique of project management allows someone to complete the project in the simplest but in the most appropriate function. This technique suits the small group where one person does not need to wait to finish the tasks of others. Managers are always ready to provide feedback or to give necessary help to the members (Smartsheet, 2018).
Waterfall technique
The waterfall technique brings some changes to the traditional technique of management and improves the procedure of working. The technique is very much similar to its name as the working process is done in a sequence where the members are depending on the completion of others’ tasks. One process is started after the completion of another. Gantts charts are generally used in this kind of technique to track the different stages of the project (Carsten and Richarson, 2013).
Agile project management
Agile project management is done by dividing the project work into some stages and delivering the completing part throughout the lifecycle of that project. Agile project management is helpful in adjusting to the different stages and to have that idea of controlling the speed to complete the project work. Agile project management offers the maintenance of the central values and other important behaviors (Bauer, 2014).
Software development projects are usually managed by agile project management. Nowadays active and other project & work management software tools are working according to Scrum and Agile in the work process. They offer the separation of the whole project work into some short-term and long-term stages on the basis of its deadline. They can make strategies and monitor the working process. These software tools are used frequently in project work and work on the basis of the agile method (Smartsheet, 2018).
Rational Unified Process
Rational Unified Process (RUP) is a software development process that is structured by dividing the project into some steps like, inception, elaboration, construction and transition. It has planned its strategies for each of the steps for the development of the project work. The technique gives its main priority to the satisfaction of the end-user (Gilliland, 2014).
Program evaluation and review Technique
Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is planning the process in detail and in a complex manner. There are charts for the PERT technique which express the results of the process visually. US Navy introduced this technique in the Cold War for the purpose of making the technologies more efficient for their work. The projects which are very big in size, are adopting this technique for the management (Bauer, 2014).
Critical path technique
The critical path technique is applied by combining it with the PERT method for the purpose of scheduling and planning the processes. It is one of the longest processes of project management. It clearly expresses the critical are of the project in which area needs more attention and controlling factor.
