2.0 Is Bezos a manager or a leader or both?
2.1 Definition of leadership
Many scholars have defined leadership in various ways. Leadership can be defined as the art of motivating others to follow one common aim and objective (Torrington et al., 2015). Leadership is the skill through which a person can gather people, enlighten them with knowledge and guide them to accomplish the same objective (Mullins, 2015).
2.2 What is Management?
Many scholars have defined management in various ways. Management means the arrangement and synchronization of resources and workers’ efforts in order to achieve the company’s ultimate aims and goals (Mullins, 2015). Management is the responsibility to manage and organize an organization’s functions and make decisions according to them. Managers work under leaders to carry out the visions and mission of the company (Torrington et al., 2015).
2.3 Leadership vs. Management
There are some roles that a leader and managers need to play in the company. However, the general functions of leadership and management are pretty different from each other (Torrington et al., 2015). Thus, a leader with good management quality can give better performance than only a leader or manager. In other words, Leaders help to see a vision and encourage the followers to accomplish the vision with their leadership. On the other hand, managers help the follower to fulfill the vision in an organized and systematic way (Mullins, 2015).
2.4 Who is Bezos? Is he a manager or a leader or both?
Bezos is a visionary person who has transformed Amazon from an online bookstore to the biggest online retailing store. He loves innovation and is very patient with long-term goals which makes him a successful leader. He is the founder and CEO of Amazon.com, one of the biggest retailing sites in the world. First, he started his business based on online books, then music and videos. Now there are about 10 million nonmedia products collections on this site. People can buy literary anything from Amazon (Hartung, 2013). Bezos had a vision that physical stores will one day decline. However, online markets will keep growing with the advancement of technology. To take Amazon in this position Bezos had to lead many staffs who workers under him to fulfill his mission and vision.
Thus he is also known as a great manager. There are some points of Bezos’s management and leadership styles. Firstly, Bezos was very patient with the long-term goals. He often looked over the short-term profits and he was confident enough to risk his resources (Svetlik, 2017). Secondly, Bezos was very passionate and kind of obsessed with his customers. He always gave the topmost priority to his customers. He knew that if his customers are happy, his brand will be known to everyone and will be successful in the market. Thirdly, Bezos liked his workers to be always prepared (Metz, 2017). He always wanted to give his customers the best service. Therefore, he wanted his staff to be competent enough.
When followers want to imitate any successful person they see his leadership quality first rather than the management quality (Mullins, 2015). However, leadership quality is needed to encourage the workers but management is the quality that will help the company to increase their competency and productivity. Bezos was encouraging and motivating enough. However, some of his staff were satisfied enough as Amazon did not offer them any incentives and better salaries than other companies in the market. Therefore, it can be said that Bezos is a mix of leadership and management features. However, on the scale of leadership and management, he is more a leader than a manager (Metz, 2017)……………………………..
