1.0 A review of an individual’s ability to influence their situation and lead others
Introduction
In my current workplace, I face difficulties and challenges in leadership practices from time to time. I deal with a team of eight members in my current workplace, where I need to make decisions and solve problems on different issues on daily basis. Most importantly, I face challenges to provide a vision for my team and selling that vision to meet the organizational goals meeting target sales for every data.
Analysis
In my current workplace, the influencing power is typically based on position. This means the higher position has more opportunity to influence others. As a leader have less opportunity to influence the situation. I have the opportunity to lead a team of eight members but cannot lead the line managers and senior management. In my current leadership practices, two particular leadership theories- trait theories and contingency theory- can be applied to gain the best outcome. According to Trait Theory developed by Great Man in 1940, as a leader, I need to focus on leadership personality and gain some key characteristics and traits including appearance, self-confidence, and intelligence (Mullins, 2014).
According to this theory, no single trait can give real success, rather be a successful leader I need to develop multiple traits with a minimal role such as personal characteristics (like energy and passion, intelligence and ability (like knowledge, intelligence), personality (like honesty and integrity), social background (like education and ability), social characteristics (like sociability and interpersonal skills), and work-related characteristics like drive and desire to excel (Kreitner and Kinicki, 2015).
According to the Contingency theory, not a particular way can give leadership success. Simple traits or behavior alone cannot predict or explain leadership (Mullins, 2014). Thus, it is essential to understand both leadership situations and traits/behavior (Greenberg, 2013). As a leader, my role is to develop task and relationship-motivated leadership with the followers and other stakeholders.
Conclusion
The finding discloses that an individual ability to influence situations and lead others differs in different situations. One of the key roles a leader is to provide vision and direction. Although I am successful as a leader in my current workplace, as a new leader I face several challenges including learning new duties, developing a clear vision, adapting to new roles, and building new networks. In this circumstance, I can gain training and coaching, seek help from mentoring with a clear message.
2.0 How ethics can influence leadership
Introduction
Ethics means the desirable and proper values or morals in accordance with an individual or the society. Ethics mainly deals with the individuals’ purity and intentions. In addition, ethics serve as the guidelines to analyze what is good or bad in a particular case. On the other hand, by correlating ethics with leadership, identity and roles of the leaders have found (Price, 2018).
Analysis
Leadership’s ethical theories mainly discuss two key things: (a) behavior and actions of the leaders and (b) characters and personality of the leaders (Price, 2018). There are mainly five principles of ethical leadership that are respect, service, justice, honesty and community (Flynn, 2014). In terms of service, an ethical leader should place the interests of the followers instead of his interests. A leader must act in a proper manner that is helpful for his/her followers (Northouse, 2013). In the case of justice, a leader must be fair in his/her work, must behave and treat equally with his/her all followers (Flynn, 2014). In terms of community building, an ethical leader has the ability and work hard to build community with his own purpose and also the purposes of followers (Northouse, 2013). In the case of honesty, a leader can gain the respect of his/her followers or subordinates through honest behavior. An honest leader represents facts and circumstances completely and in a true way, no matter how harmful or critical the facts are. A leader does not distort any fact (Northouse, 2013).
According to Mulins (2014), leaders in business organizations should ethically consider the triple bottom line concept. The triple bottom line means a triad of profit, social responsibility and stewardship of the environment that are part of the scope of corporate concerns. According to BOMI (2018), the term sustainability is a philosophy from that a triple bottom line is derived. Sustainable practices seek to reduce the environmental impact and create win-win situations (Kreitner and Kinicki, 2015)……………
