1.0  Introduction

The potential and rapid gains in the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are influencing and dramatically changing society. Thus, applying principles of AI ethics has come under deep consideration of Technology companies in terms of designing and implementing intelligent and algorithmic systems ((Battye et al., 2019).

2.0 Ethical Consideration

AI ethics ensure deployment and development of AI through maintaining safe, uttermost and ethical responsibility (Battye et al., 2019). Therefore, in terms of ethical views of the proposed new product, virtual assistants can be considered as the appropriate use of technology. This is because the proposed virtual assistant called “Poppins” will help both babies and their parents in different ways.

However, according to Dr. David Leslie, the proposed virtual assistant may cause irreparable harm for both children and parents if it is poorly designed or misused. The potential harms may include bias and discrimination, invasions of privacy, isolation and disintegration of social connection, unreliable, unsafe and poor-quality outcomes, denial of individual autonomy, recourse and rights, and non-transparent, unexplainable or unjustifiable outcomes (Fourtane, 2020).  Thus, the tech company must be ethically responsible for the development and deployment of the proposed virtual assistant.

According to Protiviti (2019), humans have moral and ethical values. However, morals and ethics differs person to person, and across culture. Thus, the development of an AI (like the proposed virtual assistant by the tech company) constitutes a range of moral and ethical implications. Therefore, it can be said if the tech company develops the proposed virtual assistant focusing on these human moral and ethical values, the product will be an ethical use of technology.

2.0  Ethical views consistent with one side

From the case scenario, it is seen that the new product called virtual assistant brings several opportunities for both children and their parents. This will save monitor babies with audio as well as video capabilities, where parents will be able to sing their babies from remote locations and/or to play other music. Additionally, this virtual assistant will work as a personalized chatbot to interact with/speak to babies, respond to child’s questions, read stories, and teach the child words along with concepts, work as a homework helper.

However, according to Marshall (2018), the parents should be concern about the ethics of the new technology, the proposed virtual assistant, offered by the tech company. Many companies want to accelerate the use of disruptive technologies through their products and processes, whereas they may lose sight of ripple effects as well as potential ethical considerations that may bring harm to the users. For example, Microsoft shut immediately one of its virtual assistants called “Teka Microsoft’s AL chatbot, Tay” within one day due to its error and misinformation before damaging the company’s reputation (Kambria, 2019).

Additionally, as the uses and advantages of virtual assistants continue to emerge within the real lives of humans, there is a high potential for unintended consequences (Battye et al., 2019). Thus, it is essential for every single parent to explore the benefits of the proposed virtual assistant called “Poppins” along with its ethical implications and potential harms/demerits. Additionally, parents should investigate its inherent features, intended functions, and nature besides its practical ethical and social issues. Parents also need to explore the responsibility for the policy and governance of the proposed emerging technology called virtual assistants. Webley (2016) stated that ethical tech matters because every technology company is trying to become technologically advanced regardless of how it is digitally advanced. Therefore, the parents should explore the background of the tech company and need to examine the product choice from multiple angles to make sure that decisions they make to use the virtual assistant “Poppins” are both strategic and savvy.

3.0  Ethical views consistent with another side

Although the tech company assures that the virtual assistant called “Poppins” will work as a repository of family memories, be able to record child’s cute perceptive or sayings questions, and upload to the interactions and record to the cloud using sophisticated language analysis algorithms, it must consider several ethical issues/system before introducing the products in the market (Martin et al., 2019). The techno company must keep in mind the rapid changes of markets and evolving of technology which may render ethical policies developed before and may inadequate to address present risks. The tech company can anticipate and respond to ethical challenges by looking into its organizational culture, technological experiences, and diversity of input, and rapid changes in technology and consumer buying behaviors (Battye et al., 2019).

Additionally, the tech company must focus on AI ethics and safety in designing and implementing its proposed virtual assistant to avoid both societal and individual harms caused by abuse, misuse, poor design and/or an unintended negative outcome. Then, the tech company must be tech-savvy in terms of defining use cases of artificial intelligence and/or cloud and need to understand the potential ethical dilemmas (Marshall, 2018). The tech company also needs to think beyond designing and implementing technologically driven capabilities to take responsibility from the start and to be truly savvy in the case of autonomous, connected and advanced technologies. Finally, to ensure ethical decision-making’s role with the respect to technology disruption and to avoid the ethical dilemmas, the tech company must drive toward a shared, cross-functional and inclusive responsibility, be ethically driven from the start, need to develop a holistic and tech-savvy approach with relevant, specific and flexible, and need to ensure its approach can evolve. These morals and ethics will help people to live co-operatively in groups, ensure and protect humanity for people’s safety, and prevent people from harm (Webley, 2016).

5.0 Conclusion

The new product called virtual assistant developed by the tech company is not immune to making mistakes and may take time to be useful. However, if it makes errors with internal programming, this can be harmful to both babies and parents.  Thus, the tech company must be concern about every single matter rated ethics, morals, safety and security before introducing the product in the market.
