I am really very proud to be a student of a university in the UK and to be happy to finish my study in the UK. At the first; I cordially give thanks to God for creating me and giving the knowledge to understand the all good and bad things. After that; I would give heartening love to my beloved parents and family members for supporting me through thick and thin.  My supervisor is an outstanding person, so, I also give thanks to him. My departmental friends are very friendly and cooperative and I give thanks to universities colleagues, librarians and other stakeholders who give me information regarding my dissertation.

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze how the UK healthcare sector has managed/is managing technologies and has processed/is processing innovation. The study will focus on the case of the NHS. Then, the study aims to provide recommendations for the UK healthcare sector including NHS on the technology management and innovation process. The objectives of this study are a) to investigate how the UK healthcare sector has managed/is managing technologies; b) to look into how the UK healthcare sector has processed/is processing innovation; c) to analyze the impact of technology used on UK healthcare sector; and d) to analyze the impact of the innovation process in Case of NHS; and to e) to provide recommendation for UK healthcare sector including NHS on the technology management and innovation process.

NHS has taken wide-ranging technological transformation initiatives in over 10 areas since 2017. These initiatives have focused on its over 1.5 million staff, 55 million patients/clients, and 100,000 social workers. UK healthcare sector has taken a number of projects in hand to improve its technological advancement. These projects cover several individual projects and landmark schemes like making online home for all online interaction with public. The major imitative taken by the UK healthcare sectors in technology usage are implementing WiFi, providing access to Health and Social Care Network, rolling out e-referrals for hospital appoints “NHS is taking several initiatives to speed up its process innovation. Innovation program has been one of the key mainstream activities in NHS that in turn directly supports all of the stakeholders of NHS. Some of the processes innovations include in NHS are machine learning algorithm for triaging patients, routine genomic testing for cancer patients, and applications of therapeutic gene editing.

The finding of this study suggests that NHS can provide effective training to its staff on the new innovation and new technologies used in its operation. Additionally, NHS can do effective research and development on the changing needs and expectations of patients, new diseases, and complicated diseases like cancer. NHS should improve clinical trials, streamlining bureaucracy, and harmonizing approval to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of its technology usages and innovation process. NHS can increase GP practices; can select new innovations to meet people’s challenges. Finally, it can increase its investment in R&D to find out new technologies and innovations.

Chapter 1: Introduction

1.0 Introduction

With the advancement of technology in the current world, the health and social care sector has adopted the new technologies and managed the technologies for their own benefits as well as for the betterment of the patients when giving care (Costa, 2017). Different advanced technologies can bring huge opportunities for great innovation in the healthcare sector in the UK. On the other hand, the technology-based healthcare system promotes health behavior that can be responsive to the needs of each patient. NHS is the leading health and social care sector in UK that focused on the advanced technology to improve the quality of healthcare services for the betterment of the patients (NHS, 2018).

In 2013; NHS has faced challenges for the innovation of digital transformation. After that, NHS has incorporated National Information Board’s (NIB) for the digitalization of the health care. This strategic care had required £4.2 billion for the treasury fund and 1.8 billion was needed for transferring service (Berland, 2016). In 2016, Wachter Review suggested that the health care center faced several barriers in the year 2018. For this reason; the strategic management of digital transformation is very important for this time to attain the paperless situation. The combination effect is also required for generating the ultimate goals of NHS. But the amount of money in this section of NHS is insufficient. According to this review; it has also suggested that the NHS can ensure their trustworthiness to the people digital maturity within the year 2023 (Littlejohns et al., 2019). Additionally; the government of the UK needs not to pay any subsidies after the year o 2023. The quality of services and safety level will be ensured in the year of 2023.  Additionally; the Long Term Plan is established by the NHS to make digital NHS within 2024. This dissertation demonstrates the process of managing and controlling digital technology and innovation.

1.2 Project Background

NHS (National Health Service) is the leading health and social care industry of the UK which is publicly funded. NHS helps the people to engage with their wellbeing, health and care that can help them to stay healthy in their life as well as also support them to manage different long-term health conditions. NHS’s main aim or purpose is to serve the nation with their better healthcare services (NHS Annual Report, 2018). The patients of NHS are satisfied with their services as this healthcare industry focuses on the advanced technology as well as different innovation processes to make the healthcare services more advanced and secured for the benefits of both the organization and the patients. As NHS is the largest and leading health care organization of UK, this manage different advanced technologies in its organization as well as process innovation to maintain the  healthy life and wellbeing of its patients (NHS Annual Report, 2018). On the other hand, NHS the lading healthcare organization leads world by using of IT in its health and care services and maintain innovation in its services to make the service faster and better for the patients.

Digital technologies affect the activities of all types of organizations inclosing the NHS. But it is matter of regret that; NHS can’t use the digital technology properly due to lack of findings, lack of knowledge and privilege form the government. But the NHS performance level depends on the staff performance that mostly depends on the use of digital technology and new innovation of modern science. All industries including health service, banking services all are depended on the digital technology and new innovation of modern science (Chandrasekhar and Ghosh, J2017). In case of health section; the need of digital technology is endless because in every step of health, there is required the use of digital technology. Modern technology is needed to identify human diseases and manage as well as prevent diseases of human beings. The information technology in the health sector ensures the deliver the information timely, and makes efficient and effective range of safety (Talyarkhan et al., 2015).  The UK and the England government have established several fundamental rules and regulations for improving the quality of data and services of NHS. Besides England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have also faced challenges and identify the process of mitigating the challenges from digital platforms.

1.3 Project Rationale

The modern organizations in the healthcare sector focuses on the advanced technology and process different innovations to make the healthcare services for the patients more effective and accurate. Nowadays, different types of advanced technologies, as well as digital equipment, are used in the healthcare sector. According to Stewart and Morris (2015), the proper management of the advanced technologies in the healthcare organizations including NHS can help to record the real-time data or clinical test information of the patients through the real-time processing equipment, to analyze the clinical data effectively for the patient’s treatment, improve the medication system and the medication safety for the patients, to reconcile better medication system, to make the quality communication between the healthcare managers, doctors or physicians and patients properly. According to Creswell (2016), healthcare organizations including NHS processes different innovations in their organization as healthcare organizations face different unparalleled challenges for improving the healthcare quality, minimizing different risks, improving healthcare access, increasing the service efficiency, lowering the service cost, innovation has become the major concern.  Technology has played a great role to bring innovation to healthcare organizations.

The continuous climate changes have negative impact on human life as well as on surface on earth.  The demand for health care services has been increasing due to the increase in chronic disease. Recently, Sir Derek Wanless also suggested that in order to advancement of technology, around three percent spending was increased over the previous 20 years and the UK need to increase the spending at a faster rate in order to keep up with other nations. The European Commission has suggested that only the technological advancement and proper use of information help to ensure high-quality health care system (European Commission 2016).

The Uk must comply with the innovation of new technology and information technology in order to ensure high-quality public services. In 1998, National Health Service (NHS) Executive suggested strategies for modern health care system. This strategy consists: a) To ensure electronic health records system and to ensure 24 hours care of each and every patient; b) to ensure electronic patient records, maintain common standards c) building NHS-wide network, common platform for all services; d) Promotion of telemedicine and tableware. The National Programme for IT ensures standardized interconnecting systems with NHS.
