1.0 Introduction
Now it is the day of business and every business competes with each other at every moment of time. The success of a business depends on the different factors that directly affect the activities of the business. One of the most important factors is the employees’ performance quality. The satisfaction of the customers also depends on the quality of performance of the staff of an organization. But it is very important for the firm to arrange adequate facility for providing adequate training to the employees. Only adequate training can motivate and enhance the performance of the employees. On the other hand, the quality of the training facility depends on the capability of using information technology (IT). Information technology is considered as the main tool for giving training facilities to employees that develop the employees’ performance (Mullins, 2015). In this research, the researcher conducts a study on the technology used in Tesco in its training and development purpose to increase staff performance.
1.1 Research Background
In this day of competition, the performance of the employees plays an important role in the development of a business organization like Tesco. Every business firm’s success largely depends on the quality of the performance especially Tesco because it is a customer-oriented business firm. The main objective of a firm is to earn profit through better customers’ services and make them satisfied. But the profitability and liquidity of a firm largely depend on the employees’ performance. Employees’ performance can be enhanced by various types of development techniques (Torrington et al., 2013). In this modern-day technology, information technology can be used as a tool for improving the performance of the employees. Information technology can be defined as the process of using computers to store, transmit, and manipulate data, or information. On the other hand training and development can be considered as the process of using techniques for improving the knowledge, skills, and experiences of the employees (Bratton and Gold, 2012)
Jawad and Hassan (2016) mentioned that information technologies play a significant role in improving the training and development of employees in the modern business world. Most the organizations like Tesco are now applying this technique for training and developing the quality of the employees (Lilly, 2017). The quality of the employees is very much for ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources and satisfying the customers and attaining the goals of the business (Lloyd, 2017). For this reason, this research paper evaluates the overall impact and effectiveness of several technologies used in the UK retail sector for training and development purposes to improve employee performance. Information technology changes the ways of the organizational chart, communication channel, coordination methods but all are happening for improving the performance of the firm (Lilly, 2017). Information technology helps the employees’ collaboration and communication power. Information technology also helps to reduce the overall training costs and development costs of employees (Mirriam and Misuko, 2017).
In the case of Tesco, the employees get enough facility of training and development. But Tesco faces some challenges due to negligence of the employees such as absent, poor quality, lack of enough knowledge, and high turnover rate. Sometimes, the trade unions movement also affects the training programs negatively (Tesco Annual Report, 2014). The poor availability of information technology also affects the training programs negatively.  For the above reason, this research will be conducted to find out the real impact of information technology used in training and development to improve employee performance of Tesco. This research will find out the current facility of information technology and training of Tesco. This research also will collect adequate and relatable data for evaluating the impact of training and development on the performance of Tesco employees. This research will identify the potential information technology that can be used in the training and development for enhancing the performance of employees of Tesco.
1.2 Research Problems
Turban (2018) mentioned that there are various researches were conducted to find out the real impact of training and development on employee performance. Rajaraman (2016) stated that most of the researches only conducted for analyzing the relationship between training and development and employee performance. But, it is rare that researchers have been conducted research for finding out the real impact of information technology used in training and development to improve employee performance of Tesco (Stone, 2017).  Tesco is one of the largest retailer shops in the UK that applies various information technologies in training and development for increasing the quality of performance. However, this company has not enough knowledge about the information technologies and the use of these technologies in training and development activities that ensure the quality of the performance of employees (Vivek, 2016). They have not enough data and information about the information technologies and training and development activities of the firm. For this reason, this research will be prepared. This research will provide adequate knowledge about the information technologies and the use of these technologies in training and development activities that ensure the quality of the performance of employees of Tesco. In addition, this research will provide enough data and information about the information technologies and training and development activities of the firm. This research will also provide some recommendations to Tesco that will be implemented for increasing the use of information technologies to ensure the quality of the performance of employees.
1.3 Research Rationale
The arrangement of training and development facility for the employees is a very costly method (McNamara, 2016). The hiring of skilled and experienced employees is also a difficult task. That is why a training and development program is required for improving the quality of performance of the qualified and unqualified employees. For providing training and development facilities to the employees, the firm can use information technology (Mehrdad, 2017). Information technology can help to improve the activities of training and development programs. It can help to develop the quality of unskilled and inexperienced employees effectively and efficiently. Information technology is also required for the firm and employees because the modern business world is changing day by day. The world becomes a small global village. The success of a firm depends on the staff’s performance. Business firms always compete with each other for surviving in the market. The use of information technology is very important for Tesco because they don’t use it in training and development programs before. That is why this research is very much important for Tesco. This research will find out the real and overall impact of information technology and recommend to the Tesco to apply various information technologies in training and development programs to improve the performance of employees………..
