2.1 Information technology and its role in retail
The role of technology is very significant in different industries including the retail industry. Pribanic (2018) said that in the retail industry, technology is changing business operations in a way that makes the business successful, automated and flexible.
Point of Sale
Technology in the retail industry helps the customers to check out where they are in store via handheld computers, printers and scanners. About 10% of customers would leave devoid of making a purchase if they have to wait for a long time in the line (Pribanic, 2018). Thus, technology in retail makes the customers satisfied. In addition, the use of technology in retail also makes the payment system easy for the customers. By use of RFID and NFC technology in retail allows customers to purchase products through their smartphone or watch. This technology in retail eliminates the need for PINs/passwords for the checkout process (Pribanic, 2018).
The use of technology in retail makes customer service better than ever before. When retail customers have to wait for long to purchase their desired products, their satisfaction levels go down. Technology in retail changes the buying process of the customers with help of self-help kiosks (Pribanic, 2018). Self-help kiosks are a significant factor of IT in the retail industry. Technology in retail has improved the shopping way of the customers by providing them personalized shopping experience.
Management of Inventory
Inventory management is a costly issue for the retail industry. The use of technology in retail can offer real-time information about products to the customers. Thus, the management of inventory needs less time. With the use of technology tracking the products items and information of the products, managers need less time to keep their products stocked (Pribanic, 2018).
For retail prices, auditing is a costly and time-consuming procedure. The use of technology in retail has simplified this procedure by checking the products’ price automatically while the products are scanned. This helps the staffs of a retailer to identify the accurate price, save the time of the employees and makes good relation between the customers and staffs (Pribanic, 2018).
