According to Ogden (2016), equality and diversity in the workplace mean to promote equal opportunity for all of the employees at the workplace through offering diversity and also providing an equal chance to them to gain their potential without any discrimination. Mustafa (2017) said that effective equality and diversity system in a business organization is important for a business organization to attract as well as retain the talented people in the workplace by showing their best efforts and services for the employees. If a business organization promotes equality and diversity effectively, it will succeed and its people can come together willingly for achieving success for the business (Richard, 2018).

1.2 Reasons for choosing this research
Tesco is the leading retailer that operates its business operations in several countries around the world. It is the well-known retail business organization that is continuously growing up with its increased profit margin, market share and sales (Tesco Annual Report, 2018). This retail organization has taken the top position in the retail sector. However, Tesco is facing challenges regarding equality and diversity management in the workplace.
A report published by Gartner (2018) disclosed that Tesco is facing a massive pay discrimination claim from its female workers. The female workers claim that they should get wages equal to male workers who do similar jobs in the workplace. A law firm is filing a case in the court on behalf of about 100 female shop workers that will affect about 200,000 workers in Tesco.

Tesco is facing other legal issues raised by 17 workers claiming pay discrimination. The workers claim that Tesco is doing pay discrimination by reducing pay for workers who work anti-social hours like night shifts, bank holidays, and weekends. This legal issue is affecting over 38000 staff at different levels of workers (Topham, 2016). These two issues are making concerns for Tesco. Thus, these have been major issues for Tesco in terms of equality and diversity practice in its workplace. This is why it has come under the eyes of researchers how Tesco should do overcome the equality and diversity issues in its workplace.
