Task 1: Types and purpose of business information
1.1 Explanation of the different types of information, their origin, and the purpose
Every business requires information to operate in the market and manage the organization and in this case, British Petroleum or BP one of the largest petroleum product manufacturers is no different (Lantolf et al. 2015, p.207). The information can be generally of two types for a firm depending on the activity and the industry it operates in which is internal information and the other is external information.
Internal Information: Internal information for a firm is the information of the internal agents of the organization, regarding their performance, state, and status. This includes the performance of the employees in production, sales and customer service, the information on the managing techniques of the employees and the resources used in the production and manufacturing processes (Stewart and Shamdasani, 2014, p.111). The quality of the product manufactured and its validity with the government regulations set in the regard.
External information: External information is the information of the events outside the organization or the firm. Which includes information on the industry its current state and status, the information on the international phenomenon that can affect the industry and the organization. It also includes information on the competition that the firm faces in the industry and the type of market and competitiveness that could be expected in this field etc
Here in this case in regards to British petroleum, keeping track of the internal and external information is the same. The magnitude of gathering and preserving the information differs from organization to organization depending on the size magnitude and the mode of operation in this regard. Here in this case of British petroleum uses a verbal written on-screen web-based organization for managing and organizing the firm (Lillesand et al. 2014, p.105).
The verbal information is the news and information regarding the employees which are collected from the production and the works sites from the workers, supervisors, and other employees to their immediate reporting authorities regarding their performances, grievances, and problems in that context. This is mostly processed and documented by the appropriate authority to keep track of the events.
At times the reports and information provided by the employees are also available in written format using on-screen multimedia or web-based methods to the company. The external information for British petroleum for the world prices of crude oil and the market competition that the company is supposed to face is based on the web and multimedia information available from different websites, and other informative agencies.
