Reflective Statement

1.1   Contemporary Leaders in V.U.C.A. Environment

The strategic business environment in the 21st century is characterized as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (V.U.C.A).  This is because technological innovation and disruption, and rapid changes and transformation continue to accelerate. In turn, the V.U.C.An environment gives challenges to businesses to gain sustainable competitive advantages (Moore, 2015). To cope with the challenges of the V.U.C.It is important for contemporary leadership to engage in learning and development activities relating to personal wellbeing. Contemporary leaders need to develop visionary and charismatic skills that support organizations to counter withstand volatile changes and market turbulence through responding rapidly with better decisions and action. Then, contemporary leaders need to harness the skills, experiences, knowledge and ideas for their followers to inspire them towards the organizational goals.  The contemporary leaders also need to promote interconnection, internal networks, and interdependency that support a business to gain in V.U.C.An environment. In addition, contemporary leaders need to foster an agile culture and analyze corporate culture to that support a business to develop a supportive and respectful organizational culture and deal with challenges of V.U.C.An environment (Byrne, 2017).

Although the V.U.C.An environment creates challenges for leadership in which they operate, it opens the door to a range of new competencies for leaders to gain success. Cognitive readiness is a valued skillet in the V.U.C.An environment where leaders need to be equipped with emotional, mental and interpersonal preparedness for risk and uncertainty. Contemporary leaders should gain cognitive readiness skills for leading in V.U.C.An environment by developing mental capabilities. Further, to meet the V.U.C.Leadership requirements and respond effectively to the challenges in V.U.C.In an environment, it is essential for leaders to undertake learning and development in relation to their personal wellbeing. Leaders need to develop a fresh, strong and decisive mindset along with self-awareness of their leadership choices. As information comes from different sources in V.U.C.In an environment, leaders need to gain skills to communicate with all levels of staff, demonstrate teamwork, for collaboration, information gathering, strategy development, empowerment and facilitation. Learning and development are also important for leaders to lead followers towards organizational goals and to improve staff motivation, job satisfaction in the V.U.C.An environment.

1. 2 Microsoft

The organization that I want to work for in the future is ‘Microsoft’. The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, practices a collaborative, participative and non-disruptive style of leadership. Satya Nadella always focuses on integrity and honesty in every decision, integration and action with his followers (Yakowica, 2018). One of the key goals of Microsoft leadership is to bring innovation and creativity to its products and services. Collaborative and participative leadership at Microsoft focuses on cultural diversity in employing over 100,000 people. This cultural diversity gives a strong sense of organizational ownership to Microsoft people to bring innovative ideas for a business. Then, Nadella believes boosting team confidence is essential to meet organizational goals. Thus, his collaborative and participative leadership style motivates the team to share their ideas and opinions that support him to understand the knowledge, experiences and confidence of the team. In another word, these leadership practices build partnership, trust and credibility among the team and leaders in the workplace of Microsoft. The collaborative and collective leadership practice by Nadella also supports Microsoft to bring improvement and changes in its products and services collectively (Macey, 2016).

The leadership practice by Microsoft brings well-being for its employees. Leadership creates a growth-mindset culture that focuses on learning and creativity and increases the innovation and creativity skills of employees. In this leadership practice of Microsoft, ideas are reflected in several programs that increase employee skills including advocating for ideas and collaborating across disciplines. This leadership practice also gives freedom of voice to the employees that motivate them and improve their performance in the workplace (Hogan, 2016). Therefore, the leadership practices have personally stimulated my desire a lot to work at Microsoft. I firmly believe that working in this environment will enhance my interpersonal skills including leadership and managing skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills, collaborative and cooperative skills, team working skills, creativity and innovation skills, communication skills, skills of working in a diverse culture.

1.3 Potential leadership style based on the leadership self-assessment

I need several competencies (knowledge, skills and behaviors) to manage my personal wellbeing as a leader. In terms of knowledge, I need to develop my knowledge and understanding of physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, the impact of personal wellbeing on individual and team performance. In terms of skills, I need to develop several interpersonal skills including emotional intelligence, time management skills, organizational skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills. In the case of behavior, I need to improve my self-discipline, ability to switch off and e-energies and need to be an effective role model to gain an appropriate work-life balance…….
