Task 1: How significant life events impact individuals as well as their social relationships
1.1 Impact of significant life events on individuals
According to Jon Glasby (2017), Life events can be defined as alternations that occur in peoples’ life all of a sudden. Life events can happen slowly or in an abrupt manner also. Some life events happen in such manners that individuals do not get time to be ready for the event. Therefore, they suffer for quite a long time and take time to get back into normal life. Life events can be both good and bad. It is not mandatory that life events will always be awful and individual has to go through negative effects. Individuals may experience positive life events too, where the effects are all positive on both the experiencing person and his surrounding people. Therefore, life events can be both positive and negative and have both effects on peoples’ lives. Depending upon the positive and negative effects the life events can be explained and discussed in many means. Life events can be categorized into different types by assessing how much stress level are they creating in the individual’s life.
Nolan (2018) stated a model which categorized life events into 40 various classes. In an example, when someone loses his loved ones, he experiences the most undesirables’ life events. This life event causes immense stress and negative impacts in that person’s life. Again, if someone loses their job or gets fired by their boss, they feel enormous stress and lead their life in great tension. Therefore, this situation can be categorized into negative life events.
On the other hand, getting proposed, wedding events, promotions, turning into parents make people happy and have positive impacts on their lives. These are the desirable life events. Thus, types of life events actually determine the impact of it impact on the individual’s life.
Taking on Debt
When I was a student all of my expenses were met up by my father who was the only earning member of our family. Suddenly he died and my earning source stopped even though I had no job. I was the elder member of the family who had to take responsibility otherwise family members would be untreated in these circumstances I had to take on debt. After taking on debt more responsibility loaded on my head. It’s clearly taking on debt will affect your wallet—but it can also affect your health. People who take on debt are more likely to report higher stress, less sleep, and weight gain than those who haven’t. I was not out of them as debt affected my wallet, even I had no job during a time of paying the installment stress level start increasing. Which affect my health and I could not sleep many nights. It was continuing in my life but I could not find the way .this circumstances make me puzzled even I was strong enough to cope with the situation. I was searching job from the beginning of my earning member loss. I managed a job with a handsome salary and start paying off debt. Paying off debt can dramatically improve life satisfaction; people who paid off a debt reported being happier with their lives and less stressed. When I started paying off debt it seems I was relieved from stress and satisfied in life. This way I faced a particular life event in my life.
Sexual Abuse
Sexual assault in childhood or adulthood impacts not only the victim but also the victim’s family and friends as well as society as a whole. In this regard, sexual assault is a public health problem that concerns everyone. Sexual assault has numerous potential consequences that can last a lifetime and span generations, with serious adverse effects on health, education, employment, crime, and the economic well-being of individuals, families, communities and societies. Sexual assault in adulthood can have an immediate and direct negative impact, such as injury, physical trauma or death. It can also lead indirectly to a variety of effects on physical and mental health and well-being. Most sexual assaults occurring in adulthood happen once and take place at a time of life when the victim’s identity and personality have been shaped. Adult sexual assault is, therefore, more likely to produce a smaller range of squeal than child sexual abuse.
Sexual assault victims are more likely to experience post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, even years after the assault took place than non-assaulted adults. This type of event attacked me in childhood when I was in class IX. One of my relatives lived in my house for few days one night he came to my room and started telling a story at the end of the story he attacked me and abused me sexually, that night I could not sleep even a single minute. I was surprised what happened in my life even could not tell anybody in my family, this event repeatedly hitting my mind and became mentally sick. I could not ea,t sleep and drink properly lost my appetite and became physically sick. this event creates a long-time effect in my mind for that reason I cannot tolerate male people even years after the assault took place. I visit a psychiatrist who diagnosed me as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) patient. Prescribe me few medicines and suggest me to visit a psychotherapist. By following the therapist and maintain his task I became well and leading a normal life. Still could not forget this event totally………………………………
