1.3 Business context
Barnardo’s transforms the lives of the most vulnerable children through the work of its projects, campaigning and research expertise. As one of the UK’s leading children’s charities it works directly with over 200,000 children, young people and their families each year, running over 900 projects across the UK. Barnardo’s aim is always the same; to bring out the best in any child, no matter what they have done, or what they have been through, as well as reaching and helping those children and young people whose voices are unheard. Its work includes helping children without families find loving homes through fostering and adoption, supporting children who have been victims of abuse or sexual exploitation and offering vocational training for young people no longer in mainstream education or employment. Its vision is that the lives of all children and young people should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination and it depends heavily on the generosity and support of the public to continue to expand this vital work (Barnardo’s, 2016).
1.4 Relevance to the topic
Barnardo believes it is vital that the needs of the most vulnerable children and young people in society are heard and it will make sure that happens. Barnardo is campaigning for policy changes so that society is one in which the most vulnerable children and families have their basic needs met and no longer face barriers to achieving their potential. Barnardo’s will fight for these children and their families on every level and strive to ensure that their needs are not ignored and are met.
Barnardo’s new corporate strategy focuses fully on the notion of a charity with high quality and impactful delivery, and the ability to influence long-term change at its heart. Supporting this is the ability to use our accrued knowledge to innovate new services. Underpinning all of this is a new approach to raising additional finance both through increased voluntary funds and by positioning ourselves as a strategic partner rather than just a delivery vehicle with local, regional and national commissioners. There are also emerging ideas about how this approach might be focused on helping more children; through their early years (children and families), maintaining their safety and well-being (safer childhoods) and helping them strive and achieve their potential (youth and opportunity).
Barnardo’s exists to transform the lives of the most vulnerable children. Barnardo achieves this by providing support to those who need it today and by using that experience to influence changes in the attitude, policies and practices affecting the children of tomorrow. This in turn will be achieved by a charity that is self-confident but also self-aware; which accepts and manages risk rather than avoids it; learns, shares and continuously improves; which is nimble and responsive, turning threat into an opportunity, whilst having the discipline to realize a long-term strategy. Above all, Barnardo’s is committed to building a charity that recognizes that its individual and collective endeavors are directed to achieve better outcomes for more children. Barnardo’s recognize that realizing this journey on behalf of the trustees is directly influenced by its values and behaviors and so it all commit to being directly accountable for these characteristics at all times and leading them across the charity……………….
