1.0 Introduction
Ethics refers to the moral understanding of behaving and it defines the acceptable conduct in society. It is a set of guidelines that helps people to follow the right paths in life. Ethics links with business when professionals provide services that affect our welfare. Therefore, the development of a society relies on the ethical conduct of a business (Gerlis, 2016). According to Twin (2020), business ethics means the implementation of knowledge inappropriate business policies with making rational decisions by critically judging various situations. It results in the welfare of the business while gaining public trust. This report will describe the two incidents of Boeing Travel which indicate the loss of 189 people traveling in a Boeing 737 Max Lion Air flight from Indonesia in 2018 and 157 people’s death while traveling by Boeing 737 Max Ethiopian Airlines in 2019.
Both of the accidents were assumed to be for the failure of software flaws and issues with sensors, specifically the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). These tragedies brought up some misfortune for Boeing’s travel industry since people do not feel safe traveling by Boeing aircraft anymore. Moreover, the consequence of these accidents is increasing travel anxiety. Even though National Safety Council’s data explains that the chance of dying in an airplane crash is very low, people are failing to travel comfortably due to travel anxiety. Boeing travel has failed to serve its passengers and gain their trust due to their unethical behavior in their performance. This report will continue explaining the unethical behavior of Boeing travel and how they are failing to hold on to their existence. Moreover, the report will also describe the factors that indicate if Boeing travel should continue in their business. Finally, by critically judging and evaluating all the factors rationally, opinions on those will be addressed in this report.
2.0 Analysis
This section will investigate the three aspects of the case of the Boeing 737 Max Lion Air flight and Ethiopian Airlines to determine if Boeing deserves to continue operating in the sector. The three aspects to be explored are technical factors, financial effects and decision-making of the company.
Society expects an industry of aviation that is not dangerous or risky for travel. On this point, the Boeing travel industry is failing quite easily. The anxiety level is very high when passengers travel by plane since statistics tell that people are more likely to die while flying than driving a car or crossing a road or even traveling by train. Therefore, people tend to be afraid of flights because it is more definite in a flight than driving a car that they might die if something goes extremely wrong while flying. Consequently, the anxiety of people placed Boeing Travel in a pathetic stage where they should re-think of considering operating anymore.
The most fundamental factor that needs to be considered when there has been an air crash is the technical factor of the company. It will elaborate on the idea of how misusing technologies in airplanes can be harmful. The second factor which must be considered in this case is the financial aspects of the company. Financial aspects will explain Boeing Travel company’s investment level and if they can recover now from the negative incidents. Lastly, the third factor should be the decision-making of the company. This factor will indicate the strategy of taking decisions of Boeing Travel Company and how it is ineffective resulting in their failure. These three factors that indicate Boeing Travel’s failure will be portrayed further in the following points of the report.
