1.0 Introduction

This reflective paper explains how learning in the module of “Academic and Employability Skills” has helped me develop both my academic and employability skills. Academic skills in this module have developed my academic integrity, numeracy, and literacy. On the other hand, a set of skills, characteristics, traits, and attributes of a person that supports the person to get the desired employment as well as to be prosperous in the place of work is known as employability skills (Cottrell, 2016). In this paper, first, I have reflected on what academic and employability skills I have developed through this module. Then, I have reflected on how learning through this module helped me to develop both academic and employability skills. I have reflected on my skills gaps, and how I can improve my skill gaps.

2.0 What academic and employability skills I have developed through this module

As Harrison (2015) notes, the term “Academic Skills” is referred to those skills which support the students to develop their language skill, self-management skill, listening skill, and learning skills. As academic skills through this module, I have developed writing skills, research skills, referencing skills, reflective and creative thinking skills, and critical analysis skills. As Gravells (2015) notes, employability skills are the major skills that are necessary for every person to get a job. Transferable skills, career management skills, and personal skills are the other name of employability skills. This module has developed my employability skills in different ways including communication skills, teamwork skills, leadership skills, time management skills, research and analytical skills, problem-solving skill, decision-making skills, flexibility skills, technical skills, and critical thinking skills.

3.0 How the learning in this module helped me to develop academic skills

Academic and employability skills are very much important for developing a good career. As Turner (2016) notes, academic skills are significant for working people because they must need higher education to tackle the occupations which are technologically demanding in the future. Without higher education, working people cannot get these occupations. Persons with successful academic skills have great self-esteem and low-level anxiety or depression in their life. However, persons with positive self-confidence and self-esteem are significant factors in the workplace. This module helps me in different ways to develop my academic and employability skills. In this module, I have covered different academic skills in terms of academic writing, research methods, and learning about academic referencing techniques. I have also developed several academic skills from this module. I have developed my writing skills such as essay writing, paraphrasing, structuring and presentation, and report writing.

Writing skills

I had to write two reports as the requirements of this module that has developed my academic writing skills. Writing skills help me to correct my grammar, spelling, and punctuation and also help me to write job applications. As writing is portable and permanent, it has made my thinking visible and expresses my personality. Now I am capable to move easily around facts, opinions, and interferences without confusing my readers. The writing skills I have gained through this module has also helped me to refine my ideas in giving others feedback, fostered my ability to explain readers and pose worthwhile questions……………………….
