Assignment on The Business Culture and Responsibilities (GC01027)
Task 2.1 Explain what is meant by ‘diversity in a business context
Diversity has to do with more than race or ethnicity. Diverse workplaces are composed of employees with varying characteristics including, but not limited to, religious and political beliefs, gender, ethnicity, education, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and geographic location. Businesses find ways to incorporate diversity into their workplaces without causing major changes to the way their companies operate. Incorporating diversity practices in a workplace can include recruiting from diverse talent pools to make the company open to employees from various backgrounds.
Diversity may be infused into advertising practices to ensure products and services are targeted to all consumers who represent the target market, whether through print, online, television, or radio. As workplaces embrace the idea of diversity, they often realize benefits that help improve their companies, from new ideas to increased international opportunities. Diversity can add varied ideas and perspectives to the workplace. Research compiled by the Journal of Small Business Management suggests that employers who recruit diverse workforces open their businesses to a wide range of ideas. Businesses compile these varied opinions and ideas as they make decisions about how to start, run, and finance their operations and market their products or services. Some of the key characteristics of workforce diversity include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, ability, and sexual orientation. A company that embraces diversity can broaden its skill base and become more competitive and innovative. Workforce diversity also brings with it a number of issues and challenges. Diversity in the Workplace is a reality in most businesses and organizations. If organizations strive to improve their competitive advantage in the market, they must learn how to successfully manage a diverse workforce.
Diversity management requires an environment of inclusion. Employees should feel like they make a significant contribution to the organization using their unique qualities. Diversity management is about taking advantage of people’s uniqueness and individuality. Then move the organization towards progress and success. Managing organizational diversity as an advantage and not as a disadvantage creates a united workplace culture. Drive it toward productivity and improvement. The benefit of focusing on diversity and inclusion within an organization is that employees feel comfortable participating and contribute their ideas. When employees feel appreciated for their individuality, they will think outside the box to help the organization grow. Diversity enables an organization to connect to different markets and to develop diversification of products, services, and strategies. The importance of diversity is that management can strategically maximize the abilities and productivity levels of individual employees.
